We drove to Florida for two days and decided to stop immediately in Columbia, SC. We weren’t looking for anything fancy and the Red Roof Inn was definitely not a four star hotel. However, they are always nice and mostly friendly dogs, so this is a great stop for our trip. I would say that Minerva is not as sweet as we thought when sleeping in a new place. Plus, with all the rooms facing the outdoor parking lot, you can hear all the sounds (and at the Red Roof Inn, you get some.
I’m weird). So that he wouldn’t be disturbed, we turned off the TV and went to sleep. It helped to avoid strange noises in the parking lot.

Our stay in Port Charlotte was amazing and the house we rented was beautiful. It’s not my favorite vacation spot, but when you have the chance to go somewhere, why not go? The pool/garden is very nice and who doesn’t like the view from the garden:
While we were stopping in Florida, Brian cut his leg badly in the fast food parking lot. He went to the emergency room for a checkup. The doctor who treated him warned him about the bacteria currently in the Florida Gulf waters. We had heard about the bacteria, but weren’t too concerned until Brian’s doctor warned us against the water. So much for my dream of enjoying the white sands and crystal clear waters of the bay. However, we didn’t let it get us down. We are a family interested in finding only the positive. If you travel a lot with kids, you learn not to let this happen to you. You want it to be a fun time for everyone and the kids will read your feelings and respond accordingly. Okay, so we can’t go to the beach. Moving forward… What are our other options?

Most of our days in Port Charlotte we enjoyed the indoor pool and left Minerva for a few hours here and there to explore some of the local restaurants. As you can see the pool area of the house was beautiful and we really didn’t suffer during our stay.

Eat by the water? Farlows on the Water in Englewood, FL is one of the most beautiful restaurants we ate at on the trip. After dinner, we took a photo by the water.
One restaurant we visited with a fun atmosphere and live music (always a bonus for us!) was Hurricane Charlie in Punta Gorda. There is also an amusement park and a large shopping center nearby.

Since we didn’t go exploring the Gulf Coast, we decided to take a day trip and organize something special for the kids. We gave up on the idea of Disney and Universal or Disney Waterpark, but there we were and decided to go where the kids weren’t yet. We chose Sea World. Now I know there is some controversy about Sea World. However, let’s check it out. Sea World no longer has new killer whales, but it protects and cares for those already incarcerated. We really enjoyed the cycling program and the atmosphere at Sea World. When purchasing our tickets, Brian arranged for a ridiculously cheap meal plan. This allowed each of us to have a full meal and dessert throughout the day. The only problem is that you have to wait an hour before you can choose your next meal.
