Dog Friendly Vacations In Colorado – Colorado has four national parks, and three of them have plenty of dog-friendly spots! Unfortunately, the country’s most famous national park (Rocky Mountain National Park) does not allow dogs on any trails. But three lesser-known parks—Great Sand Dunes, Mesa Verde, and Black Canyon of the Gunnison—are definitely worth visiting with your pup! All three of these parks are located in southern Colorado and can be combined into one great trip (dogging post Dog Friendly Colorado Road Trip). If you plan to visit multiple parks during the year, consider getting a National Park Annual Pass! An annual pass is $80, but individual park admission will be $25 or $30.
The Great Sand Dunes are about four hours south of Denver. Although it’s quite a drive, it can be made into a day trip – Alice and I did! Dogs are allowed on the first set of sand and on some trails. I was surprised when I pulled up to this big sand with 14 people behind it. The weather can definitely make or break your time at this park. We were there in the first week of April, a sunny day, not too windy, not too hot, and it was perfect! It is very cold and snowy in winter and very hot in summer. Some park roads are closed during the winter (and most of the spring), so you won’t be able to access high-level roads. If the weather is too windy, sand can get into your puppy’s eyes. If it is too hot, the sand can burn your paws. We see other dogs with boots and glasses to combat it! Colorado weather is unpredictable, but I would go in April, May, October, or before the sun rises before summer. Be sure to stop at Zapata Falls on the way up – you’ll see a sign between the highway and the park entrance. Bring waterproof shoes and at least a change of socks.
Dog Friendly Vacations In Colorado
Located in the southwestern corner of Colorado, Mesa Verde is home to many cliff dwellings built and inhabited by the ancestral Pueblo people in the 1200s. Dogs are not allowed on the cliff descent, but they can join you on the Park Point Trail, Nordskold Trail #16, and on the paved trails and trails around the Mesa Top Loop, which features many canyon corners. and cliff dwellings. It can be very hot in the summer, but the park is closed in the winter, so May or September or October might be the best time to visit. Taken

Make sure there is no shade anywhere in the water or in the garden. Don’t miss the sunset at Montezuma Valley Overlook.
If you are looking for a place to stay, this VRBO is 5 minutes from the park entrance and is great!
Controversial opinion … I prefer the Black Canyon of the Gunnison to the Grand Canyon! When I was there in July, the park was not too crowded and the view of the canyon walls was amazing. The marble work on the stone is amazing and the layer of rock formed by the canyon is truly impressive. It’s not clearly marked on the map, but dogs are allowed everywhere above the rim. The Rim Trail is definitely dog friendly. Other viewpoints with smaller trails, such as Painted Wall, Sunset Point, and Chasm Lookout, have small signs that allow dogs to be on leashes. Be sure to watch the sunset from Sunset Point, it’s beautiful! The weather here can be a problem – the main road is closed in winter, but in summer it is very hot during the day.
If you’re looking for a place to stay nearby, the Holiday Inn Express Montrose is twenty minutes from the park entrance and everyone here is very friendly. I also recommend visiting the Museum of the West while you’re in the area. It’s basically an old west town full of artifacts and dogs are allowed! One of the most pet-friendly states in the US, Colorado is a dog paradise with miles of hiking trails and abundant rivers. lakes and mountains ready to be explored by outdoor enthusiasts and their canine companions.
