Field Trips With Dogs Kauai

Field Trips With Dogs Kauai – While my husband and I were planning how to spend our last few days in Kauai, I came across a travel brochure for dog trips sponsored by the Kauai Humane Society. For a small donation, a ready-to-breed dog can be taken out for a day (or more) for a walk on the beach or even a haircut. After two weeks abroad in South Korea, we miss home and miss Yogi’s adorable Yorkie mix. We were in desperate need of pet therapy and dog dates were the perfect way to enjoy our last day on Garden Island.

Kauai Humane Society is conveniently located just 10 minutes west of Lihue. The shelter is well maintained by qualified staff and it is clear that they take pride in their daily work. Unlike the wildlife sanctuaries of Southern California, where many chihuahuas and pit bulls are lost, Kauai is largely occupied by hunting dogs. I noticed the general trend of Airedales, Whippet and Hound mixes. It turns out that these special breeds were once bred and trained to catch wild boar that had been growing on Kauai for a long time. When the dog was too old to feed him, unfortunately they ended up lost. This is one of the reasons why the Kauai Sanctuary struggles to care for a large number of stray dogs. Established in 1952, the sanctuary houses about 3,000 animals a year.

The shelter opens one hour before the time indicated above. However, the dog could not be seen at this time. As many locals have suggested, we still plan to go an hour earlier to have a better chance of picking a dog that we’ll get along with.

In the kennel area you will see different colored signs telling you which dogs are available for a dog date. These are dogs that are at least 6 months old, have received all current vaccinations and are spayed or neutered.

When I entered the shelter, I had to prepare myself for heartache and despair. I was so impressed with each dog that I tried to spend at least a minute or two with each of them. But seeing Muriel in a corner, I fell in love with her. Muriel is a shy 10-month-old bear with a cute candy armor and a sterile smile. We checked his tag to make sure he was available for a dog appointment and quickly dialed the staff member.

First you must be at least 18 years old to participate in Kauai Humane Society field trips for shelter dogs. You will be required to sign an assignment and provide credit card information for a $200 deposit in case the dog goes missing. The shelter also asks for a minimum non-refundable donation of $40.

Prohibited areas include Koke’e State Park, Waimea Canyon, Salt Lake Park, and all area-maintained parks or beaches. At its best, decide where to go for a walk. If it’s been raining recently in this area, don’t walk on the muddy trails, which can be slippery for you and your dog.

After we left the Kauai Humane Society for the first time, Muriel seemed a little shy. You can smell our dogs on our clothes. However, when we got into our Jeep, we were immediately warmed up. As he knows, we are about to embark on a great adventure!

Kauai Humane Society Shelter Dogs On A Field Trip

Although we had hoped to visit the Sleeping Giant Trail for one last walk, it had flowed the night before and we didn’t want Muriel walking through wet mud. Instead, we decided to take her for a walk to Po’ipu Beach and the Maha’ulepu Heritage Trail, just 20 minutes south of the lodge.

As we happily walked along the beach, we came across a group of people pointing at the sea and taking pictures. Honu whales (Hawaiian green sea turtles) have been observed swimming around the bay, feeding on limu (seaweed). Some are a few meters long! We spent the whole morning walking to the beach and bringing her favorite animals.

Unfortunately we only had a few hours to spend with Muriel as we had to fly out in the afternoon. She started missing him immediately.

We both shared the impression of a long walk on the beach and the salty air! The game takes place in the sky!

This Island Lets You Take Shelter Dogs To The Beach While On Vacation!

A few weeks later, my husband looked Muriel up on the Kauai Humane Society website and realized she was gone. I have a strong feeling it will find a new home immediately. It’s inevitable that someone will fall for your good attitude and positive energy!

I fully support dog walking because it allows the animals to get the fresh air they need and exercise away from their breeding grounds. The program has shown promise, with hundreds of adoptions across the country. The shelter averages four dogs a month after a memorable trip! Following the success of the Kauai Society, Maui Humane created a similar outdoor program called Beach Buddies. If you’re interested, these shelters will also help you get your dog home safely with you. As travelers looking for ways to give back to the local communities we visit, we are excited to learn about the Kauai Humane Society. Shelter Dog Field Trip “via friends who just adopted a dog from Kauai after their trip. This dog date fits perfectly into our schedule as a “vacation” where we go on our own without a fixed schedule and spend the whole day with our dog. We had an amazing experience where we wanted to share our lessons, experiences and tips. We hope you’ll also celebrate Dog Day on the go (or even locally if there’s an event where you live) and maybe even raise your own rescue dog!

Kauai has more dogs than humans, according to the Kauai Humane Society. Many of them were bred to hunt wild boar. When hunting dogs are not trained or are too old, they are left on the street. In Hawaii’s mild climate, these dogs can live on the streets for a while until they starve and are taken to shelters. This has brought the shelter to critical capacity which does not have enough space to accommodate and care for more stray dogs.

Kauai Humane Society Dog Park

This non-profit sanctuary was established in 1952 and is the only open sanctuary on the island of Kauai. It requires dogs, cats and many other animals and companions with non-lethal habitats, which is important because many habitats are forced to euthanize some animals once they are covered. The Kauai Humane Society does an amazing job of engaging the community through various programs, even for unadoptable dogs, such as boarding and day trips to the kennel. This sanctuary helps about 3,000 animals a year!

Location: 3-825 Kaumualii Hwy, Lihue, HI 96766. The shelter is about 10 minutes from the Kauai Lihue Airport. If you’re short on time, you can plan for when you land or leave Kauai.

Cost: Donate $40 to support social and humanitarian operations. There are different donation levels (from $40 to $300) that can include dog food or even assistance for dogs that have to fly from the ground to Hawaii to get pet food.

The Kauai Humane Society will provide a backpack with all the supplies you need.

Maui Humane Society Beach Buddies Visitor Program

We traveled to Kauai right after the Covid restrictions were lifted (September 2022) so some precautions remain. To a person, the staff picked a dog for us, whereas before Kovid, campers could walk into the kennel and pick a dog they felt connected to. This was a little disappointing but it made the day less exciting because I was sure we would cry when we saw so many stray dogs and wanted to give it our all.
