Frankenmuth, Michigan is a great little town to visit whether you have a dog or not. However, like several cities in Michigan, Frankenmuth prides itself on being dog-friendly. It is also home to the “world’s largest canine Olympics”, known as the Dog Bowl, and hosts numerous festivals held throughout the year. We go to Frankenmuth at least once a year!

Best Dog-friendly Beaches

I have a more detailed post here about Frankenmuth that goes beyond a trip to dog friendly Frankenmuth. But in short, Frankenmuth is a beautiful city, similar to a German village. Known as “Little Bavaria”, it is famous for its chicken dinners and is home to the world’s largest Christmas shop.

On the dog-friendly side, Frankenmuth, Michigan has many dog-themed events, especially those hosted by River Place stores. If you have a dog that loves the company of people and other dogs, plan your Memorial Day weekend trip and come to the Dog Bowl!

Fair warning: our dog didn’t like the dog bowl and we learned that Kirby doesn’t really like other dogs. It was not a good experience for us, so while I still recommend this event, I personally will never take my dog ​​to a crowded dog event again. But you know your dog, and if your dog doesn’t have a problem with crowds or other dogs, you’ll probably be thrilled.

Winter: Stroll through the decorated shops, drive past Bronner’s Light and cross the drive to Hallow’s Burgers.

Fall: Dress up your pooch for a weekend at the Scarecrow Festival or head to the dog-friendly Oktoberfest!

Their most popular is the Dog Bowl, which is “the world’s largest Olympic dog festival” on Memorial Day weekend. You’ll find dog shows, K-9 shows, dog races you can participate in, agility events, and more. We went this year and like I said it wasn’t the best experience for us, but if your dog likes other dogs and people and doesn’t mind crowds, it’s still a great event.

Another dog-friendly festival is the Stuffed Animal Festival – Dog Weekend, which takes place in mid-October. Enjoy a scarecrow show, pumpkin bowling and a dog costume contest!

River Place stores love dogs! They host the Dog Bowl and Scarecrow Festival – Dog Weekend. With over 40 shops and attractions, you can spend a whole day here. In their brochure, you’ll find dog friendly stores with paws on their listings, and stores often have paws on their doors to let you know they’re dog friendly. This is a great option if you’re stuck in Frankenmuth on a rainy day.

If you need additional shopping, you can stop at Birch Run Outlets, Calvin Klein, Carter’s, J. Home to over 100 designer stores such as Crew, Kate Spade and more. They also have a dog bakery called Doodle Doo Bakery where you can stay with your dog. Common areas are dog friendly, section E has a dog park, some stores will keep your dog with you, ask before entering!

Belle Bavarian Riverboat is located at the River Place Shoppes and offers a 60-minute tour of Frankenmuth on the Cass River. The 150-passenger authentic family riverboat is dog-friendly May through October and offers dog-friendly tours during the Dog Bowl.

We did this ride during the Dog Bowl and it was the only thing Kirby liked about the Dog Bowl!

Bronner’s Christmas Store is the “World’s Largest Christmas Store”, the entire property and grounds occupy 27 acres. With over 6,000 different ornaments to choose from and other holiday decorations, you can spend hours in this store! We love going to Bronner’s for their custom decorations and spending time in “Christmas Wonderland” any time of the year without judgment 😉

Although the store is not dog friendly, they have amazing lights at night that you can take your dog through after dark!

Walking around town or enjoying a 0.9-loop tour through Heritage Park is a great way to spend time in Frankenmuth with your dog. The heritage park also has a dog park called Hund Platz where your dog can spend some time.

We love walking under the Holz Brucke, the largest wooden covered bridge in Michigan! It has a cool story and is one of the historical symbols of Frankenmuth’s German roots.

Le Crepe du Jour – Not exactly a dog-friendly place, but a great place to grab and go. If you have someone with you, order one while you wait outside for your crepe!

N’orlins Beignets – experience the taste of New Orleans! The beignets here are very nice. They have two locations: a downtown storefront and a storefront at River Place Shops. Walking is a good option if you have a dog with you.

Take Zender’s – Famous Chicken Dinner! Zehnder’s is always busy, so be sure to call and make a reservation. They have a dog friendly patio that is open seasonally. Call ahead to make sure the patio is open.

Pasty House – serving homemade pies, cocktails, brews, hazelnuts, bubbles and a dog menu! They have a couple of outdoor tables out front.

Fischer Platz Biergarten is an open-air entertainment area that offers food, snacks and a small beer menu in the summer.

Pet Friendly Traverse City

Cheese House Food Truck – An amazing cheese house located outside the market, with unusual cheese varieties and specialties like mustards and dips. The food truck offers mac and cheese bites, grilled cheese and other cheesy treats.

Prost Wine Bar and Charcuterie is a great place to hang out on the patio with your dog! Get a wine flight, a charcuterie board, or one of their paninis!

Hello Burger. Located close to downtown near Birch Run, but worth a stop if you want to drive through and grab a quick bite.

Sugar High Bakery – they have a variety of baked goods and sweets. They even have dog treats!

Pet-friendly Vacation Rentals, Cabins, Beach Homes, Condos

The popular Drury Inn and Suites hotel is located in the heart of the city. Starts at 5:30pm with light snacks and drinks for lunch!
