We were on a mission to find the best off-leash dog beaches in Southern California, and to our surprise, our options were very limited. There are lots of off-leash beaches, but we have a pup who loves to run around and get out of the water freely, so off-leash beaches are a must.

Over the past few months, we’ve scoured all the no-nonsense dog beaches in Southern California and ranked them from least to least favorite.
Huntington Dog Beach is definitely our favorite off-leash dog beach in Southern California and we would come here every weekend if we lived closer. The dog beach area is clearly marked and there is no problem finding parking if you arrive before noon.
Its length, cleanliness and shallow waters create the best environment for pups. This was Zooey’s first time venturing into the water alone, and she had a blast walking in and out of the water.
A wonderful non-profit group manages this beach and does a great job of maintaining its “no leash” status so kids can run and play freely.

This is the first off-leash beach we opened and the furthest from LAX. For some reason, this dog beach always comes up as a Southern California neighborhood; however, Carmel is actually part of Northern California and closer to San Francisco than Los Angeles.
We decided to go ahead and include it on the list because Carmel-by-the-Sea is a dog paradise and is ranked the #1 dog town in America.
We were staying at a dog friendly hotel, so we decided to walk to Carmel Beach since parking was limited. The view here is very beautiful and the fine white sand feels so comfortable on our feet.
Kuma really likes the sand here and is very happy when his little feet touch the sand. We thought the white sand reminded us of Florida.
The Best Dog Beaches On The Gold Coast
This is the busiest dog beach we have ever visited. We arrived early around 9 and were surprised to see the parking lot full with a line out of the parking lot.
Good luck getting a place and the key is to be patient because there are always people returning to their cars to leave.
There are so many surfers, beach volleyball players and dog owners who love the beach, that even though the parking lot is large, it is always busy.
We loved how big the dog section was and the water was shallow enough so our pup could get in and enjoy the waves. There are also lots of large rocks here, so if your pup likes jumping on rocks, this is a great place.

Zooey likes jumping and rock climbing, so she is very happy. Kuma also enjoys climbing rocks, trying to beat Zooey, and chasing other dogs.
We spent the weekend in Long Beach and Rosie’s Dog Beach was a few miles from the super pet friendly hotel we were staying at.
When we started searching for dead beaches in the Los Angeles area on Google, Rosie’s Dog Beach was always at the top of the search results. It is also now the only unofficial dog beach in LA County.
When we visited early on a Saturday morning around 9:30am, there was plenty of parking and plenty of room for our pup to run around. For some reason, puppies don’t really like this beach.

This is our favorite for several reasons. Firstly, there is no parking in the area, so the only option is to find parking on the street in the surrounding area.
Access to this part of the dog beach is quite far and when you get there, the place is quite small.
