Even if you can’t tell from the pictures, the lake was very busy on the day we visited. Many people and many dogs enjoyed the view, had lunch at the restaurant, walked along the lake and rented canoes to paddle out to see the ice up close. Since crowds and other dogs make Ty and Buster uncomfortable, we decided to go up the hill where we might see fewer people.
It’s hard to resist a nice cup of tea on top of a mountain, so when I saw the sign for Lake Agnes Tea House, I made the decision.
The advertised distance is 2.1 miles, which converts to 1.1 miles, and seems perfectly doable for an afternoon hike. Let me tell you … I did this calculation in my head dozens of times on the way, convinced that my rusty math skills had failed me! It’s a long, steep climb and the start is a bit late so it’s not possible to take it slow and easy if you want to get back to the car before dark.
When a group of people coming down the mountain told us we were halfway there we almost gave up… but I’m so glad we didn’t. The view might be enough, but the sandwiches and tea we got on top were the icing on the cake.

The Lake Agnes Tea House is located at an elevation of 2,005 meters and was originally built by the Canadian Pacific Railway in 1901 as a shelter for travelers. The teahouse was started in 1905 and although the wooden building was replaced in 1981, it still has the original windows, tables and chairs.
