Hiking With Dogs Around Salt Lake City
Since I no longer have a permanent dog in Seattle, traveling without her for two weeks is no problem. Taking her with us did not make the journey any easier, although I was surprised by the attractiveness for the dogs we could find. Surprisingly, we were very lucky with the dog walks in the National Park and Redwood State.
In Washington, where we live, state parks and trails always allow dogs. However, in California, the state parks we visit do not allow dogs at all. Most national parks allow dogs wherever the car can go (paved roads, parking lots, dining areas, etc.), and Redwood National Park and the state have the same rules.
After leaving Oregon Caverns and Cave Junction, we head south on Redwood Road for an hour toward Crescent City, California. As we traveled south, the temperature began to rise and soon it was sunny and warm enough to switch to pants and shorts. The weather will not be stable, so we should spend more time near CC rather than head south.
Our first stop was the Hiuchi Visitor Center, where we could get stamps, passports and maps. Their information desk is set up as a roundabout through a small visitor center and gift shop. The rangers in Hiuchi are very helpful – they not only insist on looking through the door to say hello to Ruby, but they also have a (below) list of hiking and walking around Redwood. Regardless of the park, I recommend taking the time to ask questions and talk to the rangers to hear their story, especially here in Hiuchi.

The first hike / hike they recommend is the Walker Trail, less than 10 minutes from the Smith River. Jedediah Smith Redwood State Park is the northernmost part of Redwood State and National Park and is home to some of the oldest trees. The Walker Road Trail is a 2.5-mile (three-mile) roundabout trail on a paved / dirt road leading to the Smith River. As security told us, there are parking lots “next to pedestrian signs.” You can get off at US-199 when you see a pedestrian sign or if you turn right onto Walker, there is an additional stop. Jeddiah Smith Redwoods State Park charges parking, but if you have a nice American card, you can use it to park for free at Redwoods State Park.
We enjoyed our walk along Walker Street, stopping every five meters to photograph another large tree. There is less traffic on the dirt road due to the small roads along the main road. The Simpson-Reed Trail is also off the main road, a nice addition. This is our first hiking / trek through the red woods and it’s a great way to start part of our tour With Ruby.
The path for another dog we found was near where we were staying in Eureka. The Elk River Corridor Trail is an 18-mile trek through the pristine forest of old and new. Unspeakable, perhaps, with the sharing of campers who fall into that category (which is what happened to Ruby and me in Leavenworth). I’m ready to pack it and go if it’s a little erotic. Do not worry, I do not have to worry – it is spacious and free parking leading to a well-maintained trail.
The first mile of the trail is an old logging road paved with rubber and ADA accessible. We saw many families walking together in wheelchairs and children’s bicycles. The trail runs through the area of the old paper mill and has signs and interpretations for children. When the pioneer section is completed, the road leaves the old growth area and continues for another two miles through new open forests and meadows. The road continues for another three miles, turning to the top of the conservation area. We turned around for about two miles and did not reach the windy part. Dogs are allowed on off-road trails, though I will track them down by giving the number of children on the first part of the trail.
Hiking With Dogs
Surprisingly, the beaches along Redwood Beach are dog friendly! Moonstone, Clam Beach, Luffenholtz, Mad River and Samoa Dunes allow dogs to run and play. Golden Bluffs and Crescent Beach are the most popular dog beaches that allow dogs to crawl. We live in King Salmon in Eureka and Ruby likes to run on the beach across the street from our house. The map below shows dozens of beaches for dogs. Please note that there may be geese and sea lions on the beach, and some even visit deer!
The kind guardian at Hiuchi gives us the edition of the proposed BARC! Ranger walks or dog-friendly walks in Redwood National and State Park systems. I copied the list and added a few more that I found on the internet. The list runs north to south along the California coast.
I wish I had some good suggestions for a place to stay near the Redwoods. We stayed in Eureka, California (I will definitely talk more about this later) and while our accommodation is good for dogs, it is far from the Red Forest location we would like to visit. An asterisk * indicates a link.

Commonly known as the “Green Corridor”, a 24-kilometer public space is a former railway line that runs from north to south of Singapore.
