After years of exploring New England with my dog, I’ve narrowed down my favorite dog-friendly vacation spots. With plenty of options for dog-friendly hotels, restaurants and things to do, these dog-friendly travel ideas will give your pup two paws. Get Your Dog Friendly Kicks On Route 66
Burlington, Vermont is one of New England’s dog-friendly destinations. Burlington develops play for dogs just like their friends. You will find interesting things with your energy. Ride the Burlington Greenway along the shores of Lake Champlain, then stop for a local brew at one of the city’s dog-friendly spots. Burlington breweries that allow patio dogs include craft beer and Zero Gravity Craft Brewery, while places like Switchback Brewing Co allow dogs indoors. One of New England’s most popular flea markets (and flea markets), Church Street Marketplace is full of food and dog treats. For pet-friendly out-of-town accommodations, Made Inn Vermont, a bed and breakfast, offers you and your dog a comfortable home away from home.
When the dog days of summer hit, there’s no better place to be with your pooch than Cape Cod! With miles of pristine beaches, endless views and tons of outdoor activities, Cape Cod is the perfect summer destination for people and dogs alike. You want to visit Cape Cod National Seashore. Beaches and sun-kissed paths keep dogs entertained during high season. Then quench your thirst at Provincetown Brewery. They are such friendly (and socially conscious) dogs that the kennel displays a sign in the beer garden that reads “I bite bisexuals.” There are several pet-friendly places to stay. Treat your dog to the exclusive Chatham Bars Inn, or try to “rough it” with your pooch at Nickerson State Park Recreation Area.

Of course, you can’t visit Maine without trying a local lobster roll, and Bite in Maine is an outdoor food truck located in a park with nice picnic tables. Higgins Beach is a popular spot for dogs to enjoy the sand and splash in the water. After a long day of fun, you can relax at this beautiful beach hotel that takes great care of pets and their owners.

You and your dog will love exploring Nantucket together. This tiny island off the coast of Cape Cod has no electricity and no New England charm. After the cruise, you’ll see plenty of animal companions along the way, and Nantucket is a welcoming place for canine visitors. Choose from a variety of dog-friendly activities, from hiking the Sconset Bluff Walk to exploring historic lighthouses. There are dog-friendly bars in town, like early-morning hotspot Black-Eyed Susan and eclectic American bistro Quequeg. Stay a while at the cozy Brass Lantern Inn bed and breakfast, which welcomes four-legged friends for a nominal fee.
This dog-friendly town in Vermont’s Northeast Kingdom is a must-see. Known as the Ski Capital of the East, Stowe attracts visitors from far and wide to its world-class resort every winter. But with plenty to do outdoors in every season, Stowe is a great place to relax with your dog.
For the serious hiker, Smuggler’s Notch State Park offers miles of trails in the beautiful Green Mountains. For something a little more relaxed (but just as fun), you and your dog will love taking a walk along the Stowe Recreational Trail. It’s an 11-mile paved trail with dog-friendly restaurants and cafes along the way. For every dollar there are dog friendly places in the area. Trapp Family Lodge, Topnotch Resort and luxury cabins at Spruce Peak keep things cool. But if you’re in the mood for shopping, consider staying with your dog at Field Guide Lodge or The Stowehof.

Located on the shores of Lake Champlain, Basin Harbor believes a family vacation isn’t complete without its four-legged family members. Their pet policy allows dogs of all sizes in the apartments for a $20 daily pet fee. You can choose one of the apartments to book online and then add the pet fee at checkout.
This resort has everything you need for a great vacation, not to mention its 700 acres of land. From the river to the lake, choose from a variety of fun activities for the whole family. The pool and resort are pet-free, but dogs have their own swimming area, Fanny’s Beach. Roscoe and I rented a boat to go out on the lake! Have dinner at one of the hotel’s five restaurants. Dogs are not allowed in the dining room, but are welcome to eat with you on the bench outside Röda bruket. If you want to have fun without Fido, dog walking and sitting sessions are available.
From land to water, there are plenty of dog-friendly things to do in the pool area.

Field Guide Lodge in Stowe is a luxury boutique hotel operated by Lark Hotels. Most of their pets, as with most of their properties, allow dogs up to 70 pounds for an additional $50 per dog per day. We stayed in one of the three dog-friendly cabin suites with plenty of space and a private entrance. You can order these kits online and add a tag with your dog’s size, weight and name at checkout. Dogs must not be left alone in the guest room.
