Vacation Dog Bumper – What a day!  Taste of Reston in Reston, VA was great!  We caught up with Tommy McFly (twitter: @tommymcfly) and MIX 107.3.  During the day, Tommy organizes a hula-hula competition.  Nowadays, these races usually last 30 seconds to a minute (4 kids start, one of them wins), but there was a sibling combo run!  It took the kids over 5 minutes to lay one of them down!  The champion never escaped, but he was forced to stop.  Tommy later admitted to me that it was the longest race he had ever seen at the station and the longest race I had ever seen in my life.

I didn’t think there was so much variety of food and restaurants in one restaurant!  For lunch, 2 types of sliders (one with mozzarella, tomato and I don’t know what else), fries, and for dinner, 2 types of sushi (shrimp tempura and hard tuna).  And that’s just the tip of the iceberg – pizza, sausage, gelatin, ice cream, meat, avocado, seafood, wine, beer… there’s so much to choose from.  The hardest part about showing off a truck at one of these events is not getting carried away by the various smells wafting through the air!  It’s so hard to tell people about the truck so they can get fresh pizza or burgers – it’s so cruel to cook them right next to us!

Poor guy was strapped in like Dinky, but don’t worry, we weren’t going anywhere.  The owner says it’s fine, but if he knew what he was doing, he might not agree.  I hope you at least get some food when you get home!

Car W/ National Lampoon’s Vacation Vibes

We’re going to a car show tomorrow for Father’s Day.  My dad isn’t a robot, but it would be great if he could come down and look at the truck – he’s retired now, so I know he’s got a lot of time on his hands.

Large dogs can cause serious problems when resting – I speak from experience.

Over the past decade, my family has taken Shalom, a 75-pound German shepherd, on many trips. Over the years we have tested many houses and enclosures to keep people and animals safe and comfortable. Some solutions:

My ten year old hardtop worked fine in my parking lot, but when I got into the SUV, the hatch prevented the hatch from opening far enough to slide the car in.

Fortunately, there are racks—check the Yakima and Thule websites—that are designed with today’s durability in mind.

A 13-cubic-meter polypropylene luggage box sits on a plate mounted on a steel rod and slides into the receptacle of the parking space.

With several box releases, the box can exit the vehicle and fully enter the cargo area.

After struggling to fit an older dog and a kennel into my truck at the time, I discovered the Twistep, a 22″ x 19″ rubber clamp that attaches to short arms that fit the width of the truck.

If your dog doesn’t need it, slide it into the car to fit under the rear bumper. When your dog needs it, the quick release can pull it away from the car with a click and stay behind the car.

Pets should be kept in the car so they don’t distract the driver and become projectiles in an accident.

“Incident safety and restraint prevention are two different things,” says Lindsay Volko, founder of the Center for Pet Safety, a nonprofit watchdog group that independently tests (and does not compete with) restraint products.

“You can go to your local big-box retailer and get a distraction device for less than $20, but it won’t protect you, your family, or your pets in an accident.”

Crates: Gunner Kennel G1 anchor rope wrapped around the center crate. The vans are advertised with beds, but the center advises owners to secure the crate in the crate — and not to put dogs in the crate or in the back of the vehicle.

Soft Carriers: The PPRS Handilock and PetEgo FormaFrame Jet Set were tested with the carrier while attached to the mesh type mobile pet bed safety harness. They can be stored in the cargo area of SUVs, Volko said.

“If you have an untested soft carrier, put it behind the driver’s seat,” he adds.

Disadvantages of all restraints: Pets can be tied in a crate or harness to keep them calm and not bother the driver.

Cons: If you leave the jug in the car on a hot day, the water may be too hot.

If your dog is anxious or fearful in the car, or if your dog is sick, see your veterinarian, says Liz Stelow, director of animal husbandry at the UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine.

Dogs show stress by panting, pacing, vocalizing or crouching. They may need medication or behavior modification before driving. Motion sickness can also be treated.

Pet owners are more likely to stop unloading than dog owners, Stello notes. (Make sure they’re on a leash so they don’t startle or bend over strangers.)
