Sydney’s northern beaches have a large number of dog friendly beaches in Sydney. However, none of these dog beaches are ocean beaches, at least not yet.
The Northern Beaches Council has proposed allowing dogs at the southern end of Mona Vale Beach and the northern end of Palm Beach at certain times. However, a final decision has yet to be made, and after the last trial update in August 2023, it appears that even a trial won’t happen until 2024.

For a dog-friendly outing in Sydney’s far north, any time of day, any time of year, head to Rowland Reserve Dog Park in Bayview. (Search “Bayview Dog Park” on Google Maps).
This grassy area and the water of Pittwater are completely mowed throughout the day with no annoying restrictions. No wonder people come here with their babies from all over Sydney!
As this dog beach in Sydney is located on Pittwater, it is relatively calm and the deeper water is not far away for more confident dog swimmers. Often the dog wash truck is slowly parked nearby.
Try to get one of the designated one-hour parking spots near the off-leash area if you’re not staying too long, otherwise parking can be expensive in my experience. Afterwards, drive around the beach for a drink at Newport’s large dog-friendly beer garden.
The 11 Best Dog-friendly Beaches In Sydney 2024
Although none of the many northern beaches are truly dog friendly, there are some dog friendly areas behind the beaches near the lagoons. The northernmost of them is in Curl Curl Lagoon.
Go to the Flora and Ritchie Roberts Reserve south of Curl Curl Lagoon where dogs are allowed and many dogs can swim in the lagoon. (Adam Street Reserve west of Griffin Road also allows dogs on leashes and is adjacent to the lagoon, but does not have a sandy beach.)
Be warned that the lagoons can become polluted, especially after heavy rain, so be careful, especially if your dog ventures deeper into the water. Also note that dogs are not allowed on the sandy beach of Curl Curl Beach next to the Flora and Ritchie Roberts Reserve. There is a charge for parking in the conservation area, but there is free parking nearby.
Further south is another lagoon where dogs are welcome to swim. Manly Lagoon is located at the northern end of Manly Beach in the suburb of Queenscliff.
