Dog Friendly Vacations In New England – We call this trip the “Lincoln List” trip because this trip was driven with our friends in mind.

Our dog, Lincoln, has traveled with us since 2019 and is the main reason why we love road trips. Simply riding in the car was the easiest way for us to travel with him (and we took our Lincoln everywhere).

This route is similar to our 10 day Unfair NE Road Itinerary, but only with the best stops and tips for bringing your dog!

In the summer, they take advantage of longer days and cooler temperatures than in many other states at this time of year. Or take a road trip in the fall to take advantage of a stunning leaf drop in one of the best leaf-viewing locations in the world.

We are spending 5 months in Ontario and New England during our 2022 travel season. late August, one month in Campton, NH in September, three weeks in Ellsworth, ME in early October, three weeks in Attleboro, MA in late October. (We also spent three weeks in Ontario at the beginning of our trip).

It’s not a bad time to be in New England these past few months. Of course it can get hot at night in the summer months, but make sure your rental car has air conditioning and you’ll be fine. (To be fair, we say this as people who live in Texas, so our heat tolerance is probably higher than those who live in the northern part of the year. We also don’t do anything without air conditioning, so in that case, our tolerance is probably lower, ha! )

However, I would say that if you want to plan your trip to enjoy the beautiful fall leaves, plan your trip for the second week of October. While they will be occupying well-known locations (namely Kancamagus Highway and Stowe, VT), the decision will be worth it!

RTL News: Do you spend more time hiking or being in the water during your trip? Visit in July or August. Want to take a walk in the cozy fall leaves with a hot apple cider in hand? Visit in October. Want cooler Thrace temperatures but fewer visitors? Visit in September.

Needless to say, we could make trips as a Lincoln fan because it would be easier for him to join us. If you’re comfortable enough to drive at any point along this path, that’s what we recommend. Drive to the next point along this route and you’ll come full circle back home.

However, if you can’t get here by car, and you have a dog that’s fine on a plane, you can fly into Boston International Airport and have a rental car land behind you. If you want to, we recommend that you change this route a bit and drive from Boston > Lake Placid > Stowe > Lincoln, NH > Acadia National Park > Portland > Boston.

Note: if you live too far to drive anywhere on this trip, and your dog isn’t going to be on the plane (nor is Lincoln, unless he’s secretly flying in the seat next to us, ha! let us know in the comments below where you live and we’ll ask Lincoln to put together another list closer to the original destination.

We recommend this itinerary as a traditional road trip where you stay at a different location between stops along the way. You can search for campsites near each destination or stay in a nearby town.

For Lincoln, NH, consider Pemi River Campground or Lost Valley or the city of Lincoln. (Can you find it in Lincoln? Go to Campton, NH, twenty miles south. We had a great month at one of the Red Sleigh Cabins in Campton.)

For Stowe, consider Smugglers Notch State Park campground or the town of Stowe. (You can also see it in about 40 minutes in Burlington. Downtown Burlington is very dog friendly!)

For Acadia National Park, see Blackwood Campground or the town of Bar Harbor. (Can you find it there? Try Ellsworth, ME. If you end up in Ellsworth, check out the Blue Mountain Sunset Hike. Spectacular, dog-friendly and rivals the sights in Acadia with 1/100 the number of visitors!)

Lincoln (the town, not to be confused with our dog, shares a last name) smacks in the middle of the White Mountains of New Hampshire. That makes it a great place to start your dog-friendly journey.

You could easily spend a week exploring this area of New Hampshire on your own, as there are TONS of dog-friendly hiking trails and activities nearby! (We spent a month here and there was no way we could do and see everything on our list!)

But since we only have one day for you to enjoy the White Mountains on this road, here are our top tips of the best things to do.

This is good because you can drive the Kancamagus road from Portland to Lincoln. (So every time you go on a trip, come back to this section. If you don’t do the full trip this way, think about two hours to drive there and make a stop on the Kancamagus road in Lincoln. )

If you’re visiting in the fall, the Kancamagus road will be one of the most scenic stretches of road on your trip. And if you haven’t visited in autumn, this will happen

New England Weekend Trip With Dogs

The Kancamagus Highway is a 34-mile drive between Lincoln, NH, and Conway, NH. This is one of the most popular activities in New Hampshire and one of the first places in the United States to see the fall leaves. Although there are TONS of viewpoints and trails through this scenic threat to keep you busy along the way, we recommend only stopping at a few overlooks and walking none of these trails. (We have better neighbors!) Note: Visiting in the fall? Get up This tour fills up quickly, so ride the night before or get up early to avoid long lines and traffic jams on the way to your next destination. The Kancamagus Trail is great, but ideally it shouldn’t be your only activity of the day!

Let’s get you and your dog out of the car and into the woods! Hiking is our most popular activity of the month in New Hampshire. We were exploring every weekend and late at night. Spending time outside exploring the trails is one of the best things to do in New Hampshire.

You can see all of our hikes in New Hampshire here, but if you want our top recommendations, we recommend heading to Mount Welch-Dickey. This approximately 4.4 mile loop is a beautiful half day walk with stunning mountain views. It’s dog friendly, great exercise, and great fun if you tackle different terrain between open rock faces and wooded trails.

Welch and Dickey Mountain. We recommend climbing anti-clockwise to climb its steepest slopes. Especially if the weather is humid, or if you visit in autumn, when the leaves are still falling, this is useful. Take your time; the ground can be slippery.
