Dog Friendly Vacations Missouri

Dog Friendly Vacations Missouri

Dog Friendly Vacations Missouri – I should mention that our next three stops are to visit family and friends (St. Louis, Kansas City, and Denver). We ventured out to do some dog activities, but mostly just relaxed and made friends with some wonderful people who opened their homes to us and made our trip even better. I am so grateful to everyone who shared their homes with Oates and me and supported us on this journey.

After Ohio, we decided to drive another 8 hours and head to St. Louis to visit my aunt who lives out of town. It was great to be with him, especially since I’ve never been to Missouri. I often see him at family events, but this is a great opportunity for us to really be together. He treated me to good food and wine and introduced Oats to the dog days of summer in St. We had fun. Thanks again Aunt Dot!

I don’t really plan to do many “touristy” excursions on this trip, but I really want to see the Arch of St. Louis Gate. When my aunt told me (how did I not know this?) that her goal was to be the “Gateway to the West”, we definitely couldn’t miss it. If this is the symbol of Western exploration, then it is almost perfect for our trip.

The park is dog friendly, but it was almost 90 degrees and very muggy even though we got there early. Oats take about 45 minutes to reheat.

After Oats warmed up a bit (again – see our Ohio post!), I quickly looked for a place for him to cool off. I found Adventure Dog Park so I called and spoke directly to the owner. He said they have nice little places to cool it off, no real swimming (I also looked into a dive center in St. Louis, but when I called they had closed the pool after labor day) – but that was enough by me – until he cools down.

Treecourt is great and I highly recommend it to anyone visiting (or living near) St.Louis. There are very friendly dogs with their owners, two small dog pools with running water to cool off, lots of space to run and explore, and a small mineral pool, as apparently the area is known for mineral water this. The Oats actually had a doggy version of a day spa and met a lot of very sweet dog owners.

We were very lucky then. We visited St. Louis the day after Labor Day, so my aunt pointed out that many of the city’s public pools were open to dogs. There were probably 50-60 dogs there and Oats kept swimming around chasing the toys. I think they will be working on the pool for a few days in early September, but I am so thankful that we were there on a day when most pools are open for dogs. I didn’t bring my camera into the pool, wisely, because I was drunk when I went out, but here’s a phone video of her swimming.

Here’s a little highlight of our Instagram updates from our time in St. Louis, so you can see a little more of our great visit!

My aunt also has a beautiful butterfly garden and raises monarchs at her house every year to release into the wild. There were about 8 in chrysalis form while we were there, but we also saw a cluster of butterflies in his garden so I had to take a picture. Sometimes I get something besides oats… sometimes.

Thanks again, Aunt Dot, for a wonderful time in St. Louis and for hosting us and Oates in your beautiful home! Update dog tags and microchips. A new environment can encourage a dog to walk and explore. Hey, there are so many rocks I haven’t climbed yet! If the worst happens and your pet goes missing, updated tags and microchips can help you find them.

Practice driving. If your dog isn’t completely comfortable riding in the car, it’s a good idea to help him adjust before you go on vacation. Start with short rides and progress to longer distances.

Cover your seats. Muddy feet and nails can do something to your car’s upholstery. Using a cover will protect your seats from damage. Investing in a hammock-style cover will not only protect your seats, but your dog as well.

Book accommodation in advance. The last thing you want to do after a long day of travel is hopping from one hotel to another looking for a dog-friendly place to spend the night. Also, many campgrounds fill up quickly during peak times of the year, so be sure to reserve a spot before you go.

Carry vaccination documentation with you. If you plan to park at a dog park or kennel location, many require up-to-date pet vaccination records for entry.

Bring medications and a pet first aid kit. Be sure to pack any medications your dog takes regularly. It’s also a good idea to carry a pet first aid kit in case your dog gets any cuts, sores, or rashes – especially if your dog is the dramatic type who refuses to go if he has a slight fever.

Bring familiar things. When you’re out and about, it’s nice to have a section of the house to make sure your dog is comfortable in any environment. Water and food bowls are required (as is a crate if your pet is crate trained), but favorite toys, blankets, and bedding are also welcome.

Take frequent breaks. Traveling with Fido means you’ll have to stop more often than you’re used to. Allow your friend to stretch their legs, relax in the tub, and drink water. (Don’t forget to grab some bags for easy cleanup.)

Don’t leave your loved one alone in a hot car. It is not recommended to leave your dog alone in a car at any time, but it can be life-threatening to leave him alone in a hot car for a short period of time. Ask a partner to stay in the car with your four-legged passenger or leave the car running while you’re gone so the air conditioning is on.
