Best Dog Vacations West Coast – In this post, I wanted to take a look at the most dog-friendly destinations in the West ~ with an emphasis on California and Oregon, two states that are easy to travel with pets (I know because I travel here all the time)! In these states, I wanted to find places that go beyond being dog-friendly: spacious dog parks or dog beaches, great pet-friendly hotels, and laid-back city vibes that make it easy to bring your dog. your dog join the adventures. And we found some great places like Bend, Oregon and Carmel, CA…among many others. Join me and my dog Dylan as we search for “The Best Dog Friendly Destination on the West Coast!”
While my only dog-friendly beach destination in Oregon is Cannon Beach, remember: almost ALL Oregon beaches are dog-friendly, with far fewer rules and restrictions than California beaches! Translation: The Oregon Coast is IDEAL for dog walking. Photo of Gold Beach, Oregon.
Best Dog Vacations West Coast
I love Cannon Beach for so many reasons: the charming town, dozens of great restaurants, COFFEE (Sleepy Monk!!), many top pet-friendly hotels, and of course: the 100% pet-friendly BEACH. friendly. friendly NO leash needed here!! Oregon is much more relaxed than California in this regard. And the view of Haystack Rock is mesmerizing, especially at sunset. Walk your dog along Ocean Avenue, grab a bowl of soup on one of the many outdoor patios, and be sure to stop by the adorable pet store around the corner: Puppy Love by the Sea.
Best Dog-friendly Beaches In L.a., Both On And Off Leash
*** My picks for the best pet friendly hotels in Cannon Beach: The Ocean Lodge and Surfsand Resort are tied. Both are beachfront, luxury hotels and are very pet friendly. Ocean Lodge rooms are bigger and take better advantage of the view, but Surfsand is closer to town and Haystack Rock, the rooms are more comfortable, and the Wayfarer restaurant is my favorite place in town (and has room service).
Bend is where I currently live in the US and I honestly don’t think I’ve ever lived in a more animal friendly place. The number of amazing dog parks in Bend puts California’s dog parks to shame, and nearly every patio restaurant in town is dog-friendly, including McMenamin’s St. Francis School (which is a pub, brasserie, cinema, concert hall). , cigar bar and hotel, all housed in a former Catholic school), Naked Winery, Avid Cider, Crux Brewing, 10 Barrel… and the list goes on… and on.
Bend has more dog-friendly parks, hotels, and restaurants per capita than any other city on this list! Dylan is shown here on the popular Deschutes River Trail in downtown Bend.
*** My pick for the best pet friendly hotels in Bend: Tetherow Golf Resort. Tetherow offers luxury golf resort accommodations with incredible mountain views ~ and is only a 5-minute drive from downtown Bend and the popular Old Mill District. It’s the best pet-friendly place in town. Otherwise, head to Sunriver Resort, about 20 minutes south of Bend – one of the best family resorts in the US.
The Uk’s Best Dog-friendly Beaches Revealed
Carmel’s main beach is my favorite dog beach in the world – the legendary pebble beach is on the right, and if you follow the crescent beach on the left, you’ll find cypress trees framing the view. multi-million dollar homes of all kinds…from cute, cottage-style, to modern, modern. There’s a reason Clint Eastwood lives here: Carmel has something special.
And this town loves dogs – they’re welcome almost everywhere ~ but I especially love Forge in the Forest’s cozy outdoor patio with its dog-friendly menu…
Carmel isn’t the only place on Monterey Bay with stunning ocean views—head to Pacific Grove and stroll along the beach to see them like this…
***The top choice for dog friendly hotels in Carmel is The Lodge at Pebble Beach. Yes, it’s expensive~ but according to my parents and a useful button: every room here is pet friendly! And you can bring a dog of any size. For a less expensive option in Carmel, try Doris Day’s pup-friendly Cypress Inn.
Dog-friendly Beaches In Scotland
I grew up in Orange County and last week I met up with some friends in Huntington Beach at the new outdoor mall called Pacific City. When I went home for Christmas, I had Dylan with me ~ which meant I got to take him to the mall with me…and boy was I surprised at how pet friendly they were! The luxury shops invited us in, she had coffee with us and we all had lunch on Simmzy’s terrace overlooking the pier and the ocean. I would come back in a heartbeat! And there’s one more reason to visit Huntington with your dog: It’s the ONLY off-leash beach in Orange Country.
*** My top pick for dog friendly hotels in Huntington Beach: Kimpton Shorebreak Huntington Beach. Kimptons are famously stylish and always dog friendly… they even offer mug happy hours! And this one is romantic, with ocean views complemented by a light blue color palette ~ and just a block from the pier, Main Street, and the ocean. And Huntington Dog Beach is just a few miles north…
San Diego has not one, but two off-leash dog beaches, and both are in very difficult areas: Del Mar and Coronado. Dylan and I tried Del Mar Dog Beach, which is south of Encinitas, last year. While it’s not as big as Carmel Beach, it’s still great. There were happy dogs in and out of the water, the people were relaxed and friendly, and parking was easy as they were on the same street as the beach entrance. Coronado’s dog-friendly beach has pristine white sand and is within walking distance of the pet-friendly historic Hotel Del Coronado.
Coronado’s Dog Beach is one of the best places to play in the sand with your pup in Southern California.
Two Most Scenic Dog Friendly Road Trips In Northern California
***My Top Dog Friendly Hotels in San Diego: San Diego is big, so it depends on where you want to be. In the northern part of the county, try the luxurious L’Auberge Del Mar, which accepts two dogs of any size. If you’re in downtown Gaslamp, try the contemporary Hotel Indigo with its modern rooftop bar. And if you want to be close to Coronado’s legendary dog beach, check out Hotel del Coronado, where three of their restaurants are pet-friendly! (Only dogs up to 40 pounds in Del…)
