Today, the Lakefront Trail stretches 18 miles along the shores of scenic Lake Michigan, connecting vibrant neighborhoods, bathing parks, popular beaches neck, and famous landmarks such as Navy Pier, Buckingham Fountain, and Soldier Field.
Exploring the entire Lakefront Trail on foot was too much for us, so we chose the popular trail between Navy Pier and Lincoln Park. Our plan was to start a little further south and visit Buckingham Fountain, Grant Park, and Millennium Park, but the entire area was closed for the big music festival.
At the time of our visit in late July, the sky was overcast and the temperature was cold, making the weather in Chicago even more uncertain and discouraging the crowds. However, the city is lively and lively, and a walk on the Lakefront Trail allows you to experience the hustle and bustle of Chicago on one side and the deep, calm of the Lake Michigan on the other hand.
Navy Pier is the Midwest’s top vacation spot and Chicago’s number one vacation spot – and it’s easy to see why! Just around the corner, Ohio Street Beach is a great place to stop for lunch or a drink. Although pets are not allowed on the beach, they are more than welcome at Caffè Oliva!

Continue north until you reach Oak Street Beach. Also, pets are not allowed on the beach here, but if you want to walk the Magnificent Mile, there is a path that connects the Lakefront Trail to Michigan Avenue.
Continuing down the road, you will find Lincoln Park, one of the most popular outdoor areas in Chicago. There are trails to explore, gardens to admire, a free zoo (sorry, no pets allowed at the zoo ), and plenty of room to spread out a picnic blanket. If you’ve made it this far and need a refill, stop by the pet-friendly Café Brauer for lunch, dinner, or weekend brunch. Don’t forget the treats from the ice cream stand!
For those dogs who want to play at the lake, continue north on the Lakefront Trail for about 3.5 miles to Montrose Dog Beach. Before you go, you need to get your dog a Dog Friendly Area (DFA) tag. Tags are only available at participating Chicago vets’ offices and are required for all dogs using city dog parks or beaches .
