When Layton Judd and his partner, Louise Fahys, moved to Denver, they were surprised to find nothing like this open. They visited dog bars in other cities around the country.

“We just fell in love with the concept because it was nice to have the dogs off leash. The dog looked so happy, the owner looked so happy. There was a sense of community,” Fahys said.

After months of working with the City of Denver to come up with the right zoning and regulations to get the job done right, construction on the Happy Dog Park and Taproom can finally begin.

“This is the first end-to-end facility for Denver. There have been others that have come and opened and then added a dog park. So we have a precedent and we thank them for that,” Judd said of other similar businesses in Denver that they have since closed.

A six-meter fence will be built around the park for security. Certain rules will also be applied to minimize noise disturbances in the area.

When Happy Dog opens, owners can upload their dog’s vaccination details using a QR code. After reviewing the documents, they can enjoy the space. The dogs will also be guided by the so-called “Wooferees”.

“There’s actually someone watching the dogs in the back, watching what signs they might have if someone starts to get a little aggressive. And then they deal with that,” Fahys said.

“To be inclusive in the community, to have a place to go without fear of anything and for your dogs to be in a safe environment. That’s really what it’s all about,” Judd said.

The final price is still to be determined by the co-owners. There are options for daily, monthly or annual rates.
