Whether you live on the beach or are just in town for a visit, navigating the rules and regulations regarding dogs on the beach can be difficult – but don’t be! The alphabetical list below summarizes any posted regulations regarding dogs on the beach and provides links to information sources and/or contact information where needed. While regulations are not published, Audubon South Carolina makes recommendations as appropriate.

In addition to knowing the rules, it is important to understand why they are in place. Often, it depends on the tourist season and the number of visitors to the beach. But best of all, there are regulations to protect the bird and seabird populations that depend on these beaches for their lives.

Shorebirds and seabirds see dogs as predators, and as friendly as a dog, the sight of your four-legged friend can cause birds to flee their nests, putting their eggs and eggs at risk of dying from heat or predation. It only takes a few minutes for mom and dad to leave the nest for the eggs and chicks to die in the hot summer sun. Dogs also increase bird mortality during spring and fall migration. Because birds see humans and dogs as predators, they use precious energy to fly to feed when you approach, meaning they spend less time foraging and resting for long-mile migrations.

Regardless of posted rules, if you see a flock of birds on the beach, or signs indicating a nesting area nearby, please keep your distance, keep your dog on a leash at all times, and try not to disturb the birds. Their lives and all the people depend on it!
