Dog Friendly Beaches East Lothian – This year we are exploring Britain’s heritage with our annual passport. When we went on holiday to Northumberland, we took the opportunity to visit my friend Jenny. He ordered a meeting at Tantallon Castle, a historic Scottish property near North Berwick in East Lothian. To get to the beach, you drive down a private road with a car barrier. For a fee of £3, you have access to a small car park from which a short path takes you to the beach. A vast, seemingly deserted stretch of soft sand, so beautiful is the castle of Tantalus and the Basso Rock.

We spread a picnic blanket on the dry sand and grabbed some food before the kids ran into the sea. The clear, blue water was a bit chilly but not uncomfortable at all. Good company, a historic building and a beach with many places to run are really the best ingredients for a great family day out.

Seacliff is a hidden gem, just outside the beautiful coastal town of North Berwick, and only 40 minutes from Edinburgh and two hours from Glasgow, so easily accessible.
If you want to avoid the crowds, head to popular beaches like Portobello and Gullan, which attract more boaters, horse riders and picnickers.

It is home to what is believed to be the UK’s smallest harbour, accessible only from the coast and believed to be used by local fishermen.

Descend to the sand and enjoy the beauty of the Bassi rock, known for its crypts and lighthouse colonies, and the ruins of the Tantalian Castle.
There is no accommodation here but there is a lovely pub called The Drift just north of Tantalon Castle or North Berwick itself which has plenty of places to eat and drink.
After checking Google ratings and reviews for several countries that don’t have dog restrictions, the Rains Store is showing you that Seacliff is the best beach for dogs.
The private beach is five miles from North Berwick with paid parking and is reached by a narrow road from the A198 to Auldham.

And here’s something you might not know – during the First World War, the surviving structures of Seacliff House were used as a top secret base for the Scottish HMS Seacliff!
Durdle Door Beach in Dorset is rated as the UK’s number one dog-friendly beach, followed by Man O’War Beach and Three Cliffs Bay in Wales in third place.
