Dog-friendly Trip Itinerary In The St. Croix Valley
1. Let’s talk about travel. If you’re going on a road trip with your dog or cat, it’s important to be prepared. Safety should always come first. Like I said, I’m a simple person, so I’m a happy person when I can look out the window at the beautiful scenery of Minnesota. I myself am a big fan of wearing a seat belt. No matter what you choose if you don’t want to cut your clothes in the coming months, also put a car seat. Result? Unless Max or Tiger are driving, you start your journey on the right foot.
2. Is your pet new to flea and scratch control? Does he have a microchip? These are the things you should check off your list before you go. Also bring medical records in case of emergency or if the pet-friendly resort requires vaccinations or medical history. Putting everything into a safe and sensible adventure makes for a very enjoyable time.
3. You might be surprised how many Minnesota Resorts are pet friendly! Call if you are unsure. There may be additional fees, weight restrictions, or rules about what kind of pets you can bring (I’m not sure if Buddy the Bearded Dragon is welcome), but it’s best to ask . My favorite resort is Red Door Resort. It is spacious, the staff is friendly and attentive, there are sticks, leaves to chase and fresh air to breathe. And my family is always better when they are around. Red Door Resort has some rules, but mostly fun!
Or $15 per day to bring pets to the resort, but additional cleaning fees may apply if pet policies are not followed. They want you to keep pets on the furniture; this includes beds, bunk beds, sofas and chairs. If your pet is used to being on top of the furniture in the house (feet up), they will want you to bring a felt or blanket over the furniture. If you don’t, there will be an additional cleaning fee. It’s usually $50 if you need to wash a bed, pillow, etc., but if the furniture needs to be replaced due to damage or stains, it can be more.
A Pet Friendly Travel Destination
O Some accommodations at The Red Door Resort do not allow furry companions, so let them know when you book that you’re bringing your BFF!
O Pets are not allowed on or near the beach, but they are allowed on the pier.
O Furry friends must be leashed in the yard and do not leave them unattended unless they are in the kennel. If the dog barks or not, its cleaning staff will not be able to enter the unit.
4. What to pack for your Minnesota vacation: Fur babies or human babies, it’s always a struggle. Here’s a list to get you started:

· A first aid kit containing bandages, blunt scissors, tweezers, towels, surgical tape, a non-stick absorbent pad, alcohol wipes and an Elizabethan collar (aka cone of shame).
5. Make a plan! I always take a potty break every couple of hours and stretch my legs for a few minutes. And I want to have lunch and dinner, and if you want, of course. Flexibility is key! Maybe the weather wasn’t what you were hoping for, or maybe the pit stop made me smell a little more wood, but we were all in this together (and I DID IT IN THE CAR!) and that counts.
