Best Dog Friendly Beaches Anglesey
Applause, clap! Welcome to Barmouth, a family friendly seaside town with a huge sandy beach. Barmouth retains all the traditional seaside charm that made it popular in the Victorian era. There’s no better beach for summer fun and games by the sea, with fun casinos, donkey rides and candy floss galore. During the summer months, you’ll find slides, bouncy castles and even a pirate ship – so bring your lounger and let the kids tire themselves out while you and your little one take a well-deserved nap on the beach.
Dog Friendly Beaches In North Wales
A small section of the beach has a dog restriction from April to September, but the rest of the beach is dog friendly all year round. Even in the cramped summer months, there’s more than enough room for your pup to stretch his legs.
At low tide you can walk along the beach to Harlech – ten miles away! If you’re not feeling so energetic, walk along the coast to Fairborn, just three miles away. In summer, you can even catch the (dog-friendly) ferry back to the start! That’s what we call traveling in style.
Most people who visit Harlech come to see the dramatic remains of Harlech Castle. Built in the 13th century by Edward I of England, the castle is a UNESCO World Heritage Site with exceptional views of Mount Eriri and the coast. After a short walk through the ruins, most people discover the beach here by accident. And what a surprise awaits them!
The dunes here, which stretch over 4 miles of golden sand, are designated by the SSSI as home to rare flowers such as the bee orchid and tricolor pansy, while leatherback turtles feed on jellyfish along the shore here.

There is a restricted area for small dogs in front of the holiday park, but this is easily avoided if you turn left when you reach the beach. Bring your frisbee and sail along the coast as far as you like: sea, sand and fresh air are waiting for you and your pup to explore.
Is there anything that says “beach day” more than a row of colorful beach huts? On the National Trust’s Llanbedrog Beach you’ll find large beach huts and a sandy beach with sheltered water, all with great views over Cardigan Bay.
In the summer months (April-September) you will need to keep your dog on a leash until you pass the beach huts, after which you can let them out for a good run. You can pick up one of the National Trust’s Family Fun Adventure Packs for free from the car park, which offer lots of activities for children, including bug hunts and leaf trails.
For a slightly different view of the beach, climb to the top of the famous Tin Man sculpture, which overlooks Cardigan Bay and the Lynn Peninsula. It’s a three-mile round-trip walk to the sculpture, but we don’t think your dog will mind a few extra steps.
Crowd-free Dog-friendly Beaches In Wales
Escape the bustling beaches of Abersoch with a trip to Port Nigwll, a less visited beach near the tip of the Lynn Peninsula. The site of over thirty shipwrecks over the years, which could explain the local name Hell’s Mouth. Or maybe because of the wide, spacious, vaguely crescent-shaped mouth that forms the bay? Whatever the reason, don’t let the name put you off: the 4-mile beach here is perfect for dog walking, with no restrictions and dogs are welcome year-round.
You will likely spot surfers on the shore here as you will find some of the best surfers on the Lynn Peninsula. Keep an eye out for harbor porpoises and porpoises playing in the waves off the coast – it’s clear that it’s not just humans who love them!
Near the historic town of Caernarfon, Dinas Dinle is a fairly standard shingle beach that turns into a stretch of sand at low tide. With views across the bay to Anglesey and along the coast to the Lynn Peninsula, the surroundings are only more beautiful against the backdrop of the nearby mountains. If you look carefully, you might even see the lighthouse of Llandwyn Island in the distance. It is one of the most beautiful places to watch the sunset.
From May to September, there is a small area between the rocky jetties where dogs are restricted, but the rest of the beach is dog-friendly all year round. You can walk nearly three miles to the end of the beach, which is close to Caernarfon Airport. Plane spotters will be delighted to see the plane take off and land at the airport – just don’t forget to check out the ocean for dolphins too!
Dog-friendly Holidays In Wales
Almost the entire Anglesey coast is included in the Anglesey AONB and we soon discover why. The beaches on the island are stunningly beautiful and no less than four of them are on this list.
The first is Traeth Llanddywn, sometimes called Newborough Beach, a great sandy beach near the island of Llanddwyn and its Instagram-worthy lighthouse. Although there are dog restrictions on one side of the beach, most dogs are allowed year-round. Despite the restrictions, this is one of Anglesey’s most popular dog walks, as you can combine a trip to the beach with a walk in neighboring Newborough Forest to get the best of both worlds.
If you have time, visit Llandwyn Island for a great view of the lighthouse. Llandwyn Island is so named because it is said to be the home of St. Dwynwen, the daughter of a 5th-century Welsh king who retreated to an island after falling in love and who later became the Welsh patron saint of lovers. We love places with a story behind them and there is nothing more romantic than that.
The term ‘day beaches’ can be used to describe the coast from Rossnaiger on Anglesey. Here you’ll find three beaches, each with its own distinct character, all dog-friendly 365 days a year.
Top 10 Dog-friendly Anglesey Beaches
Traeth Crigyll is perhaps the most popular, with clear shallow waters ideal for paddling. This is the perfect place to pick up a paddle board, or you can borrow one from your local surf shop for the day your dog wants to test his puppy SUP paw.
To the south, Traeth Llydan is frequented by surfers and swimmers, while dog walkers can combine a visit to this beach with a walk along Llyn Maelog. Be careful not to let your dog swim in the lake as blue algae has been observed here.
The last beach in Rosneighr, Traeth Simiran, is the quietest of the three and is mainly frequented by fishermen. Whatever you’re looking for, Rosneighr is sure to find something to suit.
Red Wharf Bay in Anglesey has a long history. The Welsh name for it is Traeth Coch, meaning Red Beach, which comes from the rather gruesome fact that a great battle against the Vikings took place here, leaving the sand soaked in blood. In more recent times, the beach was a busy shipping port until the arrival of the steam engine, hence the name “Wharf”.
Best Dog Friendly Beaches In Wales: North, South & West
Most people are less interested in the history and more interested in the excellent dog-friendly beach here: there are no dogs at all, and at low tide the sandy beach stretches for 10 square kilometers. You can spend hours wandering the beach or walking the Wales Coastal Path to Benlech. After your walk, kick back and relax at one of the nearby restaurants: The Ship Inn is dog-friendly, while Tavern on the Bay and The Old Boathouse allow dogs at their outdoor dining.
