San Francisco ranks second for the most affordable pet-friendly activities. Greenville, Boise and Portland rounded out the top five in the rankings, respectively.

The Best Dog-friendly Restaurants And Bars In Chicago

When choosing where to live, you can consider factors such as: nearby friends and family, your job, earning potential, and higher options. But the 65 million Americans who own dogs can consider where they want their dogs to live.

The guide team tried to find out which cities are the most dog-friendly in the United States by considering factors that are most important to dogs, such as restaurants, markets and pets. We also consider an indicator that your dog may not like, but is certainly important – access to affordable veterinary care.

As an added bonus – and just for a little fun – we’ve included a separate ranking of cities with the number of baby cups per capita (at Starbucks) and even squirrels per square meter. Note: These are not among our cities.

Read on to find out where dogs live their best lives and check out our methods section below for more information on how we collect this information.

15 Best Dog Friendly Restaurants In Houston, Tx

We’ve compiled the top 98 dog-friendly cities in the United States. The map below details the five best and worst cities for dogs.

The best and worst cities for dogs are determined based on several factors important to dogs and their owners, divided into three categories: dog friendliness, dog walking and pet health.

The “dog-friendly” score includes the number of pet-friendly activities, dog-friendly restaurants and dog-friendly apartments per person. The “Dog Walkability” score includes the number of days per year dogs can comfortably play outside and the number of dog parks per capita. Finally, the “Pet Health” ranking addresses the availability and affordability of veterinary care in each city.

The most dog-friendly cities are based on seven key indicators, which determine how happy the city is for active dogs who enjoy your company. To better understand how the city performs across these parameters, we have highlighted the two main factors below.

Zillow And Bark Name America’s Most Dog-obsessed Cities

According to a recent survey, more than 44% of Americans eat out at least once a week, and 25% eat out at least two days a week. If you spend about two hours at a restaurant, that’s two to four hours away from your dog every time you enjoy a meal—unless you can take them with you. Cities with dog-friendly restaurants score higher in our system than those that don’t.

While the two Florida cities ranked high (mostly because of dining options), the cities with the fewest dog-friendly restaurants per capita spanned five different states.

It may not be your dog’s favorite, but the most important is veterinary care.

Whether they like it or not, dogs need to visit the vet from time to time. When we say visits, we mean it: Veterinary care is one of the biggest expenses of dog ownership.

These Are The Best U.s. Cities To Visit With Your Dog

To find the most dog-friendly cities, we grouped two aspects of veterinary care under the umbrella of “pet health” — the number of veterinary services per 100,000 people and the average cost per vet for annual checkups and vaccinations. The graphic below shows the five best and worst cities for accessing pet health care.

These rankings are not surprising. Oklahoma was determined to be the most affordable state to own a dog based on a recent study guide, while Kentucky and Idaho both ranked in the study’s top 15 most affordable. Affordable pet health care is a big deciding factor in these affordable price rankings.

In the same study, we identified the Golden State as the most expensive state to own a dog, mainly because it has the highest cost of veterinary care and pet insurance premiums.

As an added bonus for your dog, we thought it would be fun to check the measurements for the dog’s favorite things (although these measurements are not included in our overall ranking). So we count the number of squirrels in each city per square meter and the number of Starbucks per capita – of course, for the famous children’s cup.

Top 10 Best Dog Friendly Cities In The United States: Is Your City On The List?

Many dogs love to chase squirrels. Not surprisingly, squirrels are most common in East Coast cities (San Francisco is an exception), while Western and Southwest cities with desert-like climates are popular in this category (racing cars are not).

Residents are tied for last place due to negligible or non-existent squirrel populations. The five largest cities (by population) are shown in the figure above. No squirrels were harmed in the creation of these ratings.

Your dog deserves treats, and dog cups are all the rage. While most coffee shops offer free baby cups (espresso-sized cups filled with crema), Starbucks is one chain that offers a secret menu item for dogs, “pupuccinos.” Atlanta, Ga., and Seattle, Wash., (home of the first Starbucks) took first and second place, respectively, for places where your furry friends have the best access to sweets.

To rank the most and least dog-friendly cities, the Guide team compared 98 of the largest U.S. cities across seven metrics spanning three categories. We consider the following categories and metrics:
