First, we must choose the big picture. In terms of rig size, we knew we wanted a “any grocery store parking lot, any gas station” size. We knew we didn’t want a photo of the camper for a number of reasons, including the fact that medium-sized dog top steps seemed like a bad idea.

We looked at the B+/small C size range for a while and thought a lot about the LTV connection and the Murphy bed. Class Cs are generally in the “we’ll have to tow the car” size range, which we’ve completely rejected, and small Murphy beds seem like there’s no room to get inside, so move with the bed down. . On the other hand, we judged the 19-foot Rival to be too small and spartan for our pleasure, especially for living in it. We chose 21-foot vans: tall enough to have plenty of room inside, and tall enough for us to back out of the parking lot within a few feet. Since we really value our sleeping comfort, we felt that we didn’t need a plan with a back sofa that sits inside the bed. There was no way all those cushions would make a smooth surface. We weren’t excited about having to leave the security of sleep or make the bed every night. We’ve been thinking about buying a Travato 59G with a corner Murphy bed for a long time: it had a really good plan for storing things under the bed while still keeping the rear door usable. 2019 Model Year Modified and Propane Refrigerator – It went as far as getting the information I (Tommy) really needed.
Reading other people’s experiences with the 59G convinced us that the corner bed was not for us. It was too high for our dogs to jump on their own, and our dogs were responsible for the occasional lift (I had to lift our 65+ pound Lily into our jacked-up Jeep, which was enough). If you only have lap-sized animals, it will look different. For us, even if we force the dogs to lie on the floor, they can pile up on the floor where you want to slide off the long bed, and lots of tail kicking. With our latest addition, we now have three dogs in the 50-65 pound category – they take up a lot of space and one of them is guaranteed to be there.
With all of the above in mind, we wanted a plan with twin beds and a hallway in the middle, even if that meant leaving the back doors ridiculously open for poopers.

Most vans have twin beds that turn into a full size bed with a table on top, but I doubt we’ll ever get there. Like our arrival/departure routes, we like to keep our nights short and simple.
We plan to leave our beds up during the day, cover them with some sort of sun blanket, and at night, let the day blankets serve as dog beds on the ground.
For the review, we chose the Travato 59K, then model year 2019 or newer because of all the extras they make standard. New models are more suitable for dogs: from 2020.5, the running boards are equipped with loops for attaching the leash. We decided to let someone else bear the first year’s depreciation and bought a few used regs.
To save money, we decided to skip the Volta Lithium system, as we were no longer full. However, no lithium means we don’t run the AC if we leave the dog in the parking lot. We will install the lithium batteries later as a DIY project if needed for that use. With normal use, we expect it to be more mobile than the Class A, so we think it will charge more when driving. Also, we have solar power for the most part, and a generator for when we need to park longer.

To give you an idea of how much we love 59K, one of our biggest downsides is that the outdoor shower doesn’t have hot water, so any muddy dogs get cold water. That’s not a big mistake.
We bought a used one for 59K with a few options we really wanted: heated tanks and closing windows. Tank heaters (“hot drainage” in Winnebago terminology) come in handy in the winter, and the Travato 2019 fresh water is already inside the rig to protect it from freezing. Shutters allow us to open the windows even in heavy rain, and when slightly open they can be safely closed. Likewise, the Travato ceiling fan has a waterproof cover and can work in water. After a quick 1,300 mile trip we have a cone and the dogs are slowly getting used to it. We are beginning to find answers to some of our open questions through data.
I wasn’t sure how the door would work, but I think the dogs would be very good at using it and behaving with the door open.
Delta is still learning to wait and will slither like a snake if forced out, but he is making great progress with patience.

We were concerned that the dogs would want to “back up” on the trail, but they all seem capable of turning in this position if needed. They can also pass each other and if they are standing or sleeping on the road we can go around/over them.
Our dogs don’t jump on the bed yet. One of the beds is on top of the kitchen cabinets, so there isn’t a good place to jump. A bed has no barriers, dogs climb into it, then easily cross the road to find themselves in the bed of their choice.
Our Travato has a vinyl floor that is non-slippery for dogs. The second Lily jumped through the side door, she slipped and ran to the kitchen cupboard. We found $8 hardware store blinds that were the perfect size and easy to cut where needed. We cover it on the floor and the dogs are very happy.
Our A Class had a power outlet in the rear driver’s corner and the generator end was on the driver’s side. I was always afraid that a careless dog would cover my ears when walking immediately after driving, and the area near the generator exhaust was Mushi’s favorite resting place.

On the Travato, all dashes are on the driver’s side, away from possible dog spots. They are also out of reach of dogs as there is very little space and I doubt they will crawl under the cabin. However, Mushi will be sad to lose his private room.
Lily usually sleeps between the two front seats when we drive. That’s where it also goes in the A-Class, and in Jeeps it usually sits at least partially in the center console. He is a people dog and he wants to be close to us.
When no one walks by, Lily often jumps on her chair to look outside. (About a quarter of the time, that triggers a seat belt reminder.) In Class A, he sometimes climbs onto a passenger’s lap, all weighing more than 65 pounds, to roll the window down. I don’t think we can allow that because of the shape of the van cabin and the small seats.
Delta is very happy to sit in the back seats and look around. 59K has a good panoramic view and he is happy with it.
