Dogs are prohibited on the main beach from 1 May to 30 September but are welcome all year round on the beach next to the Liam Killeen car park to the east and the steam steps to the west.
From May 1 to September 30, no dogs on the west side of the beach. The East Coast has a “dogs on lead” policy, but this only applies to the last beach hut and to the high tide line.
From September 30 to May 1, dogs are allowed on the entire beach. They are allowed all year round on the last beach at the end of Queens Drive. There are many signs that tell you which class it is.
No dogs on the main beach (between Castle Hill and River Axe) between 1st May and 30th September.
Best Dog-friendly Campsites In Dorset 2024
Dogs are welcome year-round on the small area east of the beach, but are not allowed on the main beach between May 1 and September 30.
Dogs are welcome all year round, but must be kept on a 2 meter lead at all beaches from 1 May to 30 September.
From May 1st to September 30th, there are no dogs on the main beach, but dogs can use the monkey beach in the old Stenkai.
Dogs are allowed year-round in the dog exercise area at the end of the beach pavilion.

If your dog needs medical attention while visiting Jurassic Coast, many veterinarians in the area can provide emergency appointments. There are many beautiful places to spend a weekend with your dog within a few hours of London. If beautiful dog-friendly beaches all year round, exotic beaches and country walks are on your list, the Jurassic Coast in Dorset is a great dog destination. Last summer we decided to take Argo the dog with us and take a two day trip out of London to see Dordale and Lulworth Cove. In this post, we’ll tell you about the area and give you some tips on what to do (and what to avoid) with your dog to help you plan your next trip with your dog.
Google ‘Durdle Door’ and ‘Lulworth Cove’ and you’ll see stunning photos of similar Mediterranean landscapes that seem a long way from London. However, Lulworth Cove (and nearby Dordale) can be reached by a 2½ train journey from London Waterloo, plus a 20/25 minute bus journey, or a 3 hour drive from the city.
Interestingly, both Lulworth Cove and Durdle Gate beaches are dog-friendly beaches, making them a great and popular destination for dog owners all year round (!). What we didn’t know (although we should have guessed) is that the site attracts a lot of people, especially in August and around the holidays – the exact time we chose for our trip. This creates some logistical problems that should not be underestimated, but can be strategic to visit the Jurassic Coast in its beauty (more information in this article).
Best Dog Friendly Beaches In Dorset
There is not only Lulworth Cove and Durdle Gate to see in this area, but there are many other things to do and dog-friendly activities that we will tell you about in this blog post. But let’s start with two “must see”.
Lulworth Cove crowns the small village of West Lulworth, complete with charming thatched cottages and plenty of ice cream shops. Lulworth Cove’s crystal clear water and scenery is unlike any UK beach we’ve ever seen (except perhaps the beaches of Cornwall). The pebble beach is surrounded by volcanic cone-shaped hills, so it reminded us of Italian and Mediterranean beaches. If you go there early in the morning, you will meet fewer people and you can swim well and play with your dog without worrying about disturbing the locals.
Access to the main beach at Lulworth Cove is easy (nothing to do with Doordale, which has a steep descent and lots of steps). A short walk from Lulworth West gently descends to the beach and in a few steps you will find yourself on a clear beach. There is only a very small dog-free zone on the west side of the beach, but dogs are welcome on the rest of the beach.
On the other side of the western slope of the bay is a small rock pool.
