Dog Friendly Resorts Maine – I often travel with my friend Bernie, a 97-pound Leoburger. We can both vote for dog-friendly Maine accommodations that are not only welcoming, but often a treat.

Dog hotels are great, but don’t abuse them: if your dog is aggressive, doesn’t get along with other animals, is homeless, or barks all the time, don’t bring it; Find a channel instead.

Bernie gives a thumbs up to the Wagonhouse, which has a wet bar and a fireplace in the charming dog room – cozy for sleeping. A dog bed, small food box, cleaning bags and dishes are also provided.

Next to the ocean, Sebasco is a 550-acre full-service resort that combines old-world charm with modern amenities. With two restaurants, an outdoor saltwater ocean pool, boating, a spa, a lounge and a nine-hole golf course, the resort’s appeal is extensive.

I love Castine, a New England seaside town with a rich history and beautiful architecture. In the heart of the city is the elegant Pentagoet Inn, a classic Queen Anne Victorian in yellow, with a turret, porch and harbor views.

What most people don’t know is that the hotel also has a nearby 18th-century cottage that offers pet-friendly accommodation. All rooms are elegantly furnished with antiques and include a full breakfast (the pub boasts a dining room and cozy pub).

Even if you can’t bring the bag into the dining room, you can eat with it on the porch. Castine’s quiet streets invite a stroll, and signs posted throughout the city about its murky past are intriguing. Or head to Wetheral Woods Nature Reserve for a forest walk.

Bernie’s will be back for a great dinner in the shape of a bone (of course we also stopped at Bark Harbor Center). We were so grateful to be able to eat on the deck and enjoy the views.

Simple cabins on the shores of Big Lake make it easy for dogs to swim and play at Flying Eagle Lodge (formerly Lakeside Inn and Cabins; this review is on Lakeside). Although rooms at the country inn are not pet-friendly, there are five one- and two-bedroom suites available. Guests have free use of the dock, kayaks and paddle boats. Motorboat rentals and licenses available.

Bernie thought the woodburner would be a good place to hang out in the evening and eat porridge at the nearby Great Lake Stream Folk Arts Festival. Unfortunately, after playing music all day, he (we?) was too tired to think about it.
