This is the time of year when everyone is traveling for June break and summer vacation. Depending on where you are visiting, doctors may recommend that you get vaccinated against certain diseases that are prevalent in certain parts of the world.
Where Can I Get Vaccinations For Travel
As Singaporeans, we always want things to be cheaper, better and faster. There are many vaccination options that travelers can choose from, be it polyclinics, public hospitals or private clinics.
Travel Vaccines And Advice For Singapore
In general, public health care providers tend to be more affordable than private ones, but there are exceptions, and the difference isn’t as significant as you might think.
Here’s your guide to the different options available so you can make the best decision before traveling abroad and enjoy peace of mind.

Because different regions are endemic for different types of diseases, the travel vaccinations you need will depend on which region of the world you’re going to. According to the Singapore General Hospital, these are the vaccines you should receive based on the region you are traveling to:
Vaccine Price Comparison Chart
The travel vaccines we selected for this analysis include influenza, hepatitis A, yellow fever, diphtheria, and typhoid because these vaccines are not included in the National Childhood Immunization Schedule (NCIS).
Singaporeans can use up to $400 in their Medisave account each year under the Medisave400 scheme for 7 types of vaccines covered in the National Adult Immunization Schedule (NAIS).
However, as the NAIS largely coincides with the National Childhood Immunization Schedule, vaccines covered by Medisave400 may not apply if you received these vaccines as a child in Singapore, including hepatitis B, measles and other diseases.
Unfortunately, most travel vaccinations cannot be paid for with Medisave. If your insurance provider doesn’t cover it, that means you have to shell out the money. One exception is a flu shot (or flu shot) if you are considered at higher risk. This automatically includes anyone over the age of 65, pregnant women or those with chronic medical conditions.
Vaccinations Key To Reviving Travel
While traveling, contracting a vaccine-preventable disease can be devastating, especially if you’re stuck in a rural area with inadequate medical facilities.
Even for developed countries like the United States, a simple trip to a private flu clinic can cost uninsured foreigners $100 to $200, more than a $30 flu shot. Your illness can also be a wet blanket for those who were with you and had to sacrifice their time to care for you.
Government hospitals usually refer you to their travel clinic for travel vaccinations. We recommend that you call ahead. The price below is for one dose, but some of those we spoke to stated that hepatitis A requires 2 separate doses, while rabies requires 3 separate doses.
However, public hospitals refer you to their walk-in clinics, which are usually only open during regular business hours, meaning you can pop in on your lunch break if you work nearby.
Travel Vaccinations & Advice
Tan Tock Seng Hospital is usually the most affordable option among the medical providers we called, but please note that these prices do not include consultation fees.
In general, clinics do not carry such a wide range of travel vaccines. However, since they are usually located near residential areas, they can be a convenient option. Note that polyclinics usually close registration much earlier than normal business hours, with a lunch break in between.
Consultations may be charged depending on the type of vaccine. The mentioned prices did not differ significantly among the polyclinic chains we contacted.
Private clinics are usually located in high-income areas or near your home. Especially, if you can’t find time to go to hospitals and polyclinics during your regular work, they are useful.
Travel Vaccination For Indonesia
For Raffles Medical, there’s even a 24-hour clinic at Changi Airport Terminal 3 B2 if you really need a flu shot before you travel. We consulted four health providers who are among the largest private clinic networks across the island.
However, smaller clinics usually do not have uncommon vaccines, including yellow fever and rabies. (They even asked us how they were). Be sure to call and ask before heading down to avoid a wasted trip.
If you compare before you travel, you can get your vaccinations cheaper – usually through other channels. But if you are pressed for time or value the convenience of time and place, then going to a private clinic may be worth the extra money.
Whatever you choose, always ask about additional fees in advance so you won’t be surprised when the final bill is handed to you.

Although there is an upfront cost associated with paying for travel vaccinations, the protection lasts even after you return from your trip, especially for Singapore-born diseases such as influenza.

Rabies is a disease that can be transmitted from animals to humans. Mode of transmission is usually through saliva after a bite from an infected animal.
Travelers to rabies-prone areas may receive preventive vaccinations, depending on the level of risk in the area. From 2018, 2 separate vaccinations are given on days 0 and 7, and for those with low immunity, a third vaccination is given 21 or 28 days after the first vaccination.
However, if you suspect you have been bitten by an animal that may have rabies, you can visit the TTSH travel clinic for post-exposure treatment within 7 days.
