Best Dog Friendly Holidays In Scotland – If you’re looking for a UK getaway where you can bring your dog and relax in a remote wonderland, I’ve got the place…
I sit outside and watch the waves run faster and angrier while the dogs lie on the floor with me. Ollie is dozing on the couch, falling asleep reading a book, and I’m sitting with a large mug of tea, some delicious biscuits and my laptop, feeling the urge to write.

I put my phone away, the Wi-Fi is off, and I have no distractions except for the occasional odd song on my iPod while Shuffle plays. Eminem’s “The Real Slim Shady” just isn’t in my mood right now… Give it up!
Luxury Dog-friendly Log Cabins In Scotland
I’ve been in Erver in Noy Dart, Scotland for three days and I feel completely and utterly relaxed. I had no expectations for this vacation, no to-do list, no minimum socializing requirements, no plan!
We stayed at Camusblathen, a small holiday cottage less than 100 meters from the sea, overlooking the Isle of Skye. I’ve been waiting 5 years to return to this little piece of UK paradise and I finally did.
We stayed at the Knoydart Bunkhouse and my brother and I walked the hills while my dad met some locals about sustainable forest management. I was only here for a few days but I knew one day I had to come back, I can’t believe it’s been 5 years but here I am.
This time the cottage Ollie, Rowland and Baxter are staying in is in Erver, a small village about 7 miles from the main village of Inverness. Although Knoydart is on the UK mainland, it is only accessible by boat or by walking a few kilometers from the nearest road. The ferry that runs from Mallaig about 3 times a day in the low season doesn’t allow cars either, not that there are many places to go.
Top 10 Dog Friendly Destinations And Accommodation Guides
It was always a holiday with no plans… and with slow wifi, the only pub closed for the season, a lonely shop and two cafes 7 miles away, there was nothing to do but relax.
So far I have drunk about 20 cups of tea, cooked and eaten a lot of food, walked 3 dogs and read 1.5 books. Hygge at its best!
The views from here are extraordinary. Last time we visited we saw sharks and porpoises on the boat and this time we saw deer, pinmartins and lots of local sheep.
With the post office only going out 3 times a week and little more than a small post shop to stock up on, you have to bring everything you need with you, meaning light packing just wasn’t the same easy this time. Especially with two dogs!
Dog Friendly Travels Along The Nc500!
The cottage accommodates 7 people, with three double beds and a room with an additional single bed.
It is well equipped with all the kitchen utensils you could need in the kitchen, including a dishwasher, two fireplaces, three comfortable sofas and a large table that seats 7 comfortably.
The owner, Davids, has restored this property into a cozy and comfortable beachfront home. The walls are decorated with many local photos and paintings, and the interior is full of trinkets and pebbles related to the beach. There are enough books, DVDs and board games to keep you entertained for more than a week. Tried the 1000 piece puzzle but didn’t get very far!
Best of all, you’re just seconds away from a quick walk on the beach or a long hike in the mountains. The house is dog friendly with a porch to wipe muddy paws before entering and any dog is happy to curl up by one of the fires on a cold winter’s day.
12 Dog-friendly Days Out In Scotland
There are plenty of local dogs who are happy to join the walk and although there are some areas with sheep where the dogs are definitely on the move, there are plenty of walks where your dog can roam free.
It’s hard to capture the serenity of this place, but hopefully my photos will begin to do so.
David lends anyone in his seven-seater Toyota Landcruiser to take you and they take you out of the village during the week. It takes about 40 minutes to drive the 7 miles from the lodge to Inverness on a single lane (with some passing places).
We are here in the off-season so the pub, famous for its fresh fish, is closed, but a couple of cafes, a post office and a local community shop are open during the day.
160+ Dog Friendly Caravan Parks In Scotland
Tomorrow evening we will visit a local woodworking workshop with mulled wine and locally made forest gifts. This is the only night we go out, unfortunately we miss the town hall music night as we have to leave before Saturday night.
The small community seems to have something going on every week and everyone supports their local businesses in any way they can. I was surprised to find that most people work in Kanwarath in one way or another and very few people travel to Mallaig for work. There is always more to do and lots of people sharing their skills. “If you help me with electricity, I’ll build your garden.” I like!
I wonder why we don’t try to move back home with our neighbours, maybe when Ollie and I find our own country house and move to a village or a small village?
David’s house is available to rent from March to October for £750 per week all season (weekly, no extra charge for school holidays). This includes the use of a 4×4 vehicle, unlimited logs for the fire and everything you need in the house such as toilet roll, kitchen foil, oil and spices, bed linen and towels. You just need to bring your own food and drink and anything else you can pack for your holiday.
Cottages That Sleep 8 In Scotland
Accommodation at Knoydart is limited so book quickly for next year, but you can check availability on the Camusblathan website.
On my next trip to Scotland with dogs I will be visiting dog friendly Dumfries and Galloway, doesn’t that sound amazing!
I chose to visit Knoydart and stay at Camusblathen and David offered me a discount to cover my expenses, although as always the views are 100% my own and genuine.
David embarks on his big adventure this year, spending nearly two years walking over 6,000 miles across the UK listening and volunteering at every branch of the Samaritans. You can learn more about David’s audition on his Facebook page.
