Located a half-hour drive from historic Blountville, this private cave system has been millions of years in the making, with known cave history dating back at least 1,300 years. These walls and trails deep beneath the mountains of Tennessee have stories to tell, from Native Americans to Revolutionary War soldiers.

The caves are now open to the public and offer visitors a unique experience. The tours last about 45 minutes and are about a half-mile long walk, up the stairs.

These caves not only provide an educational experience, but also offer a cool respite from the hot Tennessee sun in the summer months, as well as a relatively warm and dry place in the rain and cold. The temperature inside the caves remains the same throughout the year, making it a great vacation.

In addition to traditional tours, Appalachian Caverns also offers Wild Tours, which include climbing, crawling through tight spaces, and even exploring the river that flows through the cave.

This nature preserve is a 10-minute drive from downtown Johnson City and has 725 acres with over 12 miles of trails. I enjoyed the quick hike up to Huckleberry Knob and the viewpoints at sunset to see Johnson City in the picture below.

If you are driving to Buffalo Mountain Park, be aware that the road has a steep incline toward the park entrance and that parking is limited at the trailhead.

Closer to downtown Johnson City is the Tannery Knobs Overlook. This city park is famous for its pump lane, which offers a fantastic view of the city and the mountains in the distance. It also has over 40 acres and a small hiking trail for those without mountain bikes to enjoy the park.

Rent a bike from Local Motion Cyclery and hit the trail. The Tweetsie Trail is part of the Rails to Trails program and runs 15.6 miles from Johnson City to Elizabethtown in Northeast Tennessee. This paved path used to be the well-known Tweetsie Railway, but is now perfect for walkers, runners and cyclists.

Along the way, you can see monuments from the railroad era and admire views of farmland and forest. I even parked my bike for a moment to sit on a bench and enjoy the peaceful silence punctuated by birdsong.

After enjoying the Tweetsie Trail, head around the corner from the trailhead for a beer at Cranky’s Pump n Pints. Kids will love the Pump Track, and adults will love the fireplace and friendly bar atmosphere. Locals and neighbors always gather here and immediately greet me when I stop by.

The approach is steep and there is parking for the disabled and one free space. Otherwise, you can park along the street or in the free parking lot at the beginning of the trail.

For road trip enthusiasts and motorcyclists, the Southern Dozen in Johnson City offers a unique experience as they traverse the heart of the Appalachian Mountains in Northeast Tennessee.

Each route is carefully planned to offer cyclists a variety of experiences, from winding mountain passes and quiet valley rides to historic towns and local culinary delights.

Designed for touring motorcycles, they are also perfect for tourists looking for scenic rides. There are currently 12 routes available, with the core and more routes to be added in the future.

Hands on! The Discovery Center, formerly a children’s museum, was relocated to the Gray Fossils site and transformed into a science museum for all ages. I was a little nervous when I went to visit, thinking it was a children’s destination, but it’s actually a fun, interactive museum that will appeal to adults as well as little ones.

Our Whirlwind Weekend In Dog Friendly Hill Country

The fossil site was discovered by accident during road construction – fossils and ivory were found for the first time during the work, which may be common at Ice Age sites. However, further research revealed the skeleton of an ancient alligator, meaning the fossils are approximately 5 million years old, which halted construction and allowed the fossil site to be preserved as an excavation site.

This alligator can still be seen in the museum at the Discovery Center, along with fragments of the largest mastodon ever found and the largest collection of tapir fossils in the world. Visitors can learn about the ancient history this Tennessee foothills once experienced, learn about a dozen new species found here, and even see scientists and volunteers working in the fossil lab near the dig site.

In the warmer months, an outdoor pollinator garden teaches guests about the importance of conserving and protecting pollinators. Free outdoor activities teach children about the relationship we have with food, using seed tables and other activities.
