Dexter’s epic dog journey 2019 has officially begun! January and February were filled with local dog-friendly day trips, but Cambridge, Ohio was our first pet-friendly weekend getaway. Traveling with dogs is always more fun with friends, so I invited Dexter’s BFF Levi and his mom Kris to come with us.

Cambridge, Ohio is located in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains in southeastern Ohio in Guernsey County. With a population of around 13,000, this small town would be a great place for dogs to explore.

The Most Dog-friendly National Parks In Every Region

Our first stop was lunch at McKenna Market in downtown Cambridge. This dog-friendly restaurant offers outdoor seating and with the sun shining we stayed warm and dry even in March! The family market is owned by the McKenna family, who have been active in the delicatessen and market sector since the 1970s. The family renovated the century-old historic building, which quickly became a dining destination. McKenna’s Market is known for its great homemade food and salads, so we knew we were in for a great experience.

The menu was extensive and offered a variety of dishes to suit everyone’s taste buds. Chris ordered the shrimp basket and I went with the Fiesta Chicken Salad. Hot coffee for us and the dogs, they were welcomed with fresh water and dog treats.

As we sip our coffee, people walk up to us, chatting and petting their dogs. They were a great success, everyone was so nice and fun. During our lunch, people came in and out of McKenna’s front door. They have a hopping company. When our food arrived I quickly discovered why. The food was great!

When I travel, I try to order food that isn’t my usual fare, and I’m usually satisfied. The party salad was bomb! It was so fresh, colorful and full of flavour. My taste buds and stomach were very happy. Chris’s Shrimp and Chips looks warm and inviting. She said they were cooked to perfection.

In the evening I looked inside McKenna Market. It was stocked with bulk snacks, fruits, candies, gourmet cheeses, meats, artisanal and local foods, freshly ground coffee beans, grape soda, wine and more. I ordered some of their well-known brands with a bag of freshly ground coffee for dinner.

We thought it would be fun to walk around the city looking for interesting and colorful sculptures, murals and local monuments. We were not disappointed. Cambridge is home to former astronaut and US Senator John Glenn. We didn’t get to visit the John and Annie Glenn Museum with our dogs, but we did find an Ohio historical marker about it.

Another local celebrity was William Boyd. William Boyd rose to fame as cowboy star Hopalong Cassidy, appearing on the big screen in the 1930s and 1940s and on television in the 1950s. Cambridge has the Hopalong Cassidy Trail, a collection of memorabilia displayed at various locations in historic Cambridge. Finding some screens was fun.

Our bellies were craving something sweet, so we headed to Kennedy’s Bakery. Kennedy Bakery has been serving Cambridge since 1925. Family members have been baking for more than 80 years. This bakery seems like a great place to pick up pastries.

When I walked in, I was greeted with a warm smile and the sweet smell of fresh pastries. There were so many great items to choose from! I was surrounded by fresh pastries, breads, cakes, cookies, cupcakes, donuts, brownies, candies and more.

One of the owners, Patty, gave me a behind-the-scenes tour. I was shocked at how big the bakery actually was. They have old ovens and appliances that they have been using since they opened the store. I really enjoyed the family’s love and dedication to the bakery and their community. It was a beautiful experience.

Before I left, I ordered a dense chocolate brownie, a fresh donut, and some of their best-selling tea cookies. As I sank my teeth into the decadent sandwich, it became clear that these sandwiches were made with love and fresh ingredients. Tea cookies are so cute that I hardly want to eat them. But I’m glad I did; They were moist with just the right amount of sweetness.

It’s time to call us and head to our dog-friendly lodge at the Salt Fork Lodge and Conference Center (click for more information about the lodge). After feeding the dogs, Chris and I got ready to dive into our sub from McKenna Market. I ordered the Roscoe Village Chicken Salad and Chris ordered the McKenna’s Favorite. McKenna’s favorite was packed with capicola, salami, pepperoni and an Italian four-cheese blend. My salad was simply amazing. It had large pieces of chicken. It was very unique and delicious.

Dogs And Roadtrips

After our full day of exploring Cambridge, Ohio, it’s time to hit the hay and relax for adventures. Saturday should be a full day of hiking and exploring Ohio’s largest state park, Salt Fork. But first sleep!
