Pups Gone Camping: 6 Pet-friendly Campervan Rental Companies
First we have to decide what we want to do. As for size, we know that “every parking lot, every gas station” needs to be small. We knew we didn’t need a camper for a number of reasons, and the top deck seemed like a bad idea for medium-sized dogs.
We have been eyeing a B+/small C for a while and are seriously considering an LTV unit with a Murphy bed. We’ve rejected many C-Classes because they’re usually “we have to pull” size and small beds because there’s not much room to move the bed down. . On the other hand, we dismissed the 19-foot Revel as too small and too cramped, especially when seated. We finally settled on a 21 meter long van: long enough to have plenty of room inside and short enough to pull out a few feet from a parking space. In practice, we usually put two spaces on top of each other, but it is better not to do that
We felt that we didn’t need a floor plan with a bunk bed in the back because we value our sleep so much. There’s no way all those pillows are even. We weren’t in the mood to make or break the bed every night. For a long time, we thought we’d go for the Travato 59G with the corner bed: it had a better storage scheme under the bed and the rear door could be opened for use. This led to the discovery of many features – many of which I (Tommy) loved, such as the 2019 model switching to a propane refrigerator.
Reading other people’s experiences with the 59G finally convinced us that the corner bed was not for us. It was too much for our dogs to jump on by themselves, and too heavy for our dogs to carry around all the time (I already have to carry 65+ pounds of Lily to load into our jacked-up Jeep, and that’s enough). If you have small pets, it can be very different. In our case, even though we always let the dogs sleep on the floor, they tend to pile up on the floor, where you have to slide off the long bed, with lots of tails. With our recent additions, we now have three 50-65 pound dogs – they take up a lot of space, and one of them is sure to be in there.
The Best Camper Van For Dogs
With all of the above, we might prefer a floor plan with two beds and a passage through the middle, even if the rear door opens differently for a sprinkler.
Most two-berth vans can be converted into a large bed by raising the table up, but I doubt we could do that. Like our arrival/departure routine, we like to keep our night routine short and simple.
We plan to leave the blankets outside during the day, cover them with some kind of day cover, and put them on the floor like dog beds at night.
Looking at the reviews, we chose the Travato 59K, followed by the 2019 model or newer, because all the extra features are worth it. New models are more comfortable for dogs: from 2020.5, the footboards have loops for attaching the leash. We decided to have someone else cover the first year’s costs and buy some used equipment.

To save money, we have decided to abandon the Volta Lithium system as we are no longer in business. No lithium and no air conditioning when we leave the dogs in the parking lot. If lithium batteries are needed along the way we will provide them later as a DIY project. For efficient use, we expect it to be faster than Class A, so we often find ourselves charging for administration. If we’re going to be out for a long time, we’ll need a basic solar panel and generator.
To give you an idea of how much we love the 59K, one of the biggest issues for us is that the outdoor shower doesn’t have hot water, so any dirty dogs are washed in cold water. It’s not a big problem.
We got a used 59K with some of our favorite features: hot tub and insulated windows. Tank heaters (“hot water” in Winnebago) help in the winter, and the 2019 Travato’s water pipes are already encased in steel to prevent freezing. Shutters give us windows that stay open even in heavy rain and can be securely closed when left open. Likewise, the Travato roof heater has a rain cover and will run in the rain. After a quick 1300 mile trip we have the car and the dogs are slowly getting used to it. We begin to seek answers to our obvious questions through experience.
I don’t know how they play with the door, but I think the dogs are really good with it and behave when the door is open.

Delta is still learning to wait and she slips like a cow when she tries to break free, but she is making great strides in calmness.
We were concerned that the dogs would “go back” on the trail, but they all seem to be able to go back if needed. They can walk facing each other and we can walk around them while they are standing or lying down on the path.
Our dogs still don’t jump from driveways onto beds. One of the beds ends up in the kitchen cupboards, so there’s no room to jump on it. Another bed is unobstructed and dogs can easily climb onto it and then cross the aisle to sit on any bed they want.
Our Travato has a vinyl base and is very slippery for dogs. The second time, Lily jumped through the side door and slipped to the kitchen cupboards. We found hardware door closers for $8
