Travelers traveling the highways of the Southwest and Midwest in the mid-20th century likely noticed a couple of barn roofs with the words “See Rock City” written on them. This is the iconic marketing plan created by Garnett and Freda Carter to promote their attractions on Lookout Mountain in Georgia. The gardens opened to the public in May 1932, and in the following years, more than 900 barn roofs in 19 states advertised Rock City.

The Carters began creating this huge strolling garden in their private garden in the late 1920s. They collected more than 400 plant species from the area and placed them along a winding path among the complex’s unique rock formations, including Eye of the Needle, Balancing Rock and Fat Man’s Squeeze. Now visitors from all over the world come to enjoy the botanical and geological features of this unique attraction.

ROCCITY GARDEN PET POLICY Pets must be on a leash at all times, all pet waste must be collected and disposed of appropriately, and leashed pets are welcome on the enchanted walkway and Cafe 7 Strollers patio (baby and pet friendly). Entry to the park is prohibited due to narrow paths and steep stairs.
The total length of the trail is only 3/4 of a mile, but there is so much to see that it can take two to four hours to see everything.

On the way out, adventurers can cross the Swing-A-Long Bridge, a 50-foot suspension bridge that cuts through the clear blue sky. (And if you’re nervous about heights, opt for the sturdy stone bridge.) And if you work up an appetite, the Big Rock Grill at the entrance offers outdoor seating and casual dining, all pet-friendly.
