Some hotels have ground-floor rooms with private terraces, some offer beds and treats like dog biscuits, and many allow dogs in the bar or lounge so they can eat with their owners. Beck Hall is surrounded by some of the most beautiful countryside in the Yorkshire Dales, making it an ideal base for walkers and nature lovers. The original yeoman’s house was built in 1705 and has been extended over the years with many sympathetic extensions, while the beautiful garden features large century oaks and weeping willows. Food (mainly made from Dales produce) is served in the modern restaurant and bar, and guests can enjoy afternoon tea in the cozy atmosphere of an open fire. Dogs are allowed in the restaurant and free in 21 rooms (maximum occupancy 3).
This beautiful palace looks like a castle with its turrets, battlements and a huge entrance. Inside is an old English mansion, with acres of polished wooden floors and red carpets, wide corridors lined with ornate paintings and large windows. You won’t be bored here: as well as a range of countryside activities, there are walking trails (dogs welcome, £25 per night), four acres of walled gardens, a nine-hole golf course and a cookery school. The elegant and airy spa offers a variety of thermal experiences as well as indoor and outdoor swimming pools. The room, although in need of updating, was very nice, with sloe gin, built-in bookshelves and a very large bathroom.
Just 10 minutes from the beach and despite the hustle and bustle of Scarborough, the property feels in the countryside, surrounded by its beautiful fields, woods and gardens. This former Victorian farmhouse, all ivy covered golden stone window frames, has been thoughtfully extended with additional wings and two courtyards with beautiful water features. Inside, it was intended to preserve the rustic feeling, but with the smarts of a country house. Dogs are very welcome (£10 per night) and can eat with their owners in the garden. All 32 rooms are a good size, some with four poster beds.

Devonshire Fell is set in some of North Yorkshire’s most beautiful countryside, with walks, paths and lovely countryside in the Dales nearby. The hotel is part of the Duke of Devonshire’s 30,000-acre Bolton Abbey estate, whose 12th-century abbey ruins lie six miles to the south. The striped pink and charcoal carpets in the hallways of this beautiful Victorian building are the work of the Duchess of Devonshire, who regularly visited the family seat at Chatsworth House in Derbyshire in search of antiques and paintings. Most rooms have separate baths and showers, and dogs are allowed in all rooms for a fee of £10 per dog per night.
