Western North Carolina is one of the most dog-friendly places in the country, and once you get here, it’s easy to see why.
If you have any questions, the Landmark staff should be able to answer them as well as recommend local things to do for you and your family members who are angry. Most of us have deep roots in the Highlands-Cashiers Plateau and know the area well. We can’t wait to share a piece of our mountain paradise with you!
We imagine how amazing it would be to visit an outdoor paradise like Highlands-Cashiers from a dog’s perspective. So we got one of our favorite Landmark Ambassador pups to write about his experiences in the mountains to give you an idea of what your dog vacation or day trip to North America might be like.
Today is not like most days. Mom carries many bags. He took his camera and put on his shoes. Of course not. You wear my harness and that means I’m going too!
Outer Banks Dog-friendly Beaches
We walked out the door. I was good at jumping in the car by myself and he told me that I was a good girl. I love that car because it’s magical. My mom and I went in and sat for a while and ended up somewhere amazing together. Sometimes it’s one of my favorite places and sometimes it’s a new place.
We will go we will go we will go. It feels like years. We waited for a few minutes so I could go to the bathroom. That’s amazing. where can we go
I stuck my head out the window. Wow, it’s getting cold outside! No perfume is the same. This is a new place! The road is gone and the roads are tight. Oh… now I get it! We’re going to the mountains!
We got out of the car in a beautiful cabin. Lots of new scents. I am very happy! After a few moves, my mom put me in the car and we drove to a place called the Ugly Dog in the cash registers. I wonder if only dirty dogs can come in because if that’s the case I won’t allow it. I am very cute. Mom says Ugly Dog is just an expression and all dogs are welcome to eat with their owners on the outdoor patio. So, I used to talk to my mother while she was eating dinner and drinking. After that we drove back to the cabin. I need to sleep before I go on another new adventure!

We had breakfast and got into the car again. This is so exciting! Car rides are my favorite and we continue to do so. I stuck my head out the window. We are on the street with beautiful Christmas lights everywhere. I heard my mother say that it is the hills of Jalan Utama.
We parked and started walking. We went to the store and everyone in the store greeted me and called me. Mom says if I’m fine we’ll go get food, so I’ll make sure I’m fine.
A store on Main Street has dogs walking in and out. We walked in and it was a shop for me! There are toys and food everywhere! This is Highlands Mountain Paws. My mom went to the cafeteria and filled a bag of natural food for me as I welcomed my new poodle friend to the store. He also picked up a new string toy. After we checked out we got back in the car and I was able to enjoy one of my meals…but not for long!
We got in the car and just a few minutes later we were at the Highlands Dog Park! There are many dogs to play with. I took it with the Australian Shepherd and we ran and ran and ran around the dog park. Mom pulled out the rope toy she bought me at Highlands Mountain Paws and we started playing our favorite game, tug of war, with an Australian Shepherd named Lucy.

By the end I was very tired. I just dropped it in the dog park over there. I’m ready for sleep. So, my mother and I packed up, and we returned to the tent that was our livestock. He put me in my suitcase for a much needed break from all the excitement and told me he and his friends were going shopping and a nice dinner at Wolfgang’s in the Highlands.
Mom was driving and told her friend that she was excited that they were going on a North Carolina dog vacation. And I must be happy too! We drove for a while and ended up in Panthertown Valley. This scared me a little because I had heard that panthers are big, mean cats. But Mom says there aren’t any panthers, so I guess we can try.
I love being outside in the mountains. The fresh air above is very nice. There are many new and sweet things in the forest that I don’t know but still love to hear. We finally arrived at our destination and I couldn’t believe it. It is water, but a lot of it, and it is very fast and strong. And there’s a pool where it ends so I can play! Mom said we had arrived at Grandmother Burrell’s Falls. I walk in the water and he tells me that I am a great swimmer. We had to leave the waterfall, but continued walking through the forest for a while. It’s fun to be with mom. We got back to the car and I curled up in a towel to dry off.
Mom said we have one more stop before we go home. We pulled into the parking lot and entered the building. Gentlemen! There are paintings of dogs on all the walls. A nice lady came from behind the desk and gave me a gift. Well, I like it here. Everyone wanted to pet me and asked my mom what kind of dog I was. He proudly told them I was a Wheaten Terrier. I jumped on one of their inflatable seats while talking to them. She thanked them for a pet-friendly stay and asked them to build another pet-friendly apartment with them next spring.
