This is one of the few places on Long Island where you can find a beautiful and fun place to walk your dog.

One of the main attractions of Montauk Point is the historic 200-year-old lighthouse. For a fee, visitors can climb to the top of the lighthouse and view the Atlantic Ocean and all of Montauk. Travel eastward to Montauk and you’ll pass through the charming neighborhood known as The Hamptons. Summer fun on Long Island is all about the beaches! Sunbathing, surfing, jet skiing, sailing, or hiking in the dunes and cliffs are some of Long Islanders’ favorite pastimes. Having grown up on Long Island, I can testify that Long Islanders love their beaches and waterways! Unfortunately, there are very few beaches around ‘The Island’ that allow dogs. However, there are at least two great beaches in Montauk that are open to dogs at any time of the day! It’s not like the beaches of Montauk’s neighbor, The Hamptons, where strict rules restrict beach access for dogs.
Camp Hero was a military base until the 1980s, when it was transferred to the New York City Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation. It was even used as a cannon range during the Revolutionary War! No. No shells were found except one in a nearby pond. Hahaha! Camp Hero is located along the beautiful Montauk Beach and is dog friendly! We had a great time in the sea, admiring the beauty of the beach and the rocks.
In the photo below you can see the historic Montauk Lighthouse in the distance. We had to walk up a steep and narrow path to get from the rocks to the beach, but it was worth it!

The steep cliffs of Camp Hero are eroding and getting too close to them can be dangerous. We enjoyed their beauty from a safe distance.
