One of my childhood memories is visiting and boating in the historic town of Echuca on the mighty Murray River. I was finally able to return in 2021 between quarantines and of course I took the dog with me.

To get the most out of Beechworth with your dog, I recommend purchasing a self-guided walking tour brochure from the Visitor Information Center for a small fee. Then roam the main streets of the city.
While in Beechworth, it’s also worth taking a scenic gorge walk along the Beechworth Heritage Park in the north of the town. You can ride it in the car or walk all or part of it with your dog. Make sure you keep them on a leash.
Most ski slopes in Australia do not allow dogs, either because they are in a national park or due to other restrictions. But Dinner Plain in the Victorian High Country is an exception, meaning your dog can join you on snowy adventures during the winter months. This ski resort has gentle slopes perfect for beginners, sledding or just having fun.

While there may be many trams on the streets of Melbourne, did you know that Bendigo has an ancient talking tram? It’s a great way to explore this historic city, especially if well-behaved dogs can accompany you on the tram.
Comments will guide you on your way. Choose to travel around the city by tram (which takes about 45 minutes) or hop on and off as often as you like. Tickets are valid for the whole day.
Along the way, you’ll pass the Deborah Central Gold Mine (dogs are allowed on the self-guided land tour), historic courthouses and Soldiers’ Memorial Hall, and Lake Viruna (a great place to walk your pup).
Bright is becoming an increasingly popular destination, including for dog owners. There are plenty of dog-friendly trails in this small High Country town. But if you want something different, consider cycling with your dog.
Dog Friendly Destinations
There are many cycle routes near Bright. And if you don’t have a bike, there are several bike rentals in the city. At least one of them, Electric Bikes, also offers dog trailer rentals, though other stores may ask for them directly. Double check the weight limits.
A popular choice for novice cyclists is the relatively flat cycle route to Wandiligong, just 3.5 miles from Bright and home to the Nightingale Brothers Apple Orchard. Afterwards enjoy a swim in the River Owens or a local beer at Bright Brewery.
There are many places in Victoria to see koalas in the wild, but one of the best is Raymond Island near the entrance to the Lakes in East Gippsland.
I recommend going to Raymond Island, parking for free in Painesville and taking the short ferry ride as a walker. The Koala Trail starts opposite the ferry terminal and is a great walk to see Koalas.

Bicycle steamers aren’t the only dog-friendly form of historic transport in Victoria – there are plenty of dog-friendly heritage train rides available. Near Melbourne, you can ride a vintage steam train on the Victorian Goldfield Railway, which connects the gold mining towns of Castlemaine and Maldon.
When choosing a carriage, be sure to select the excursion class (only service dogs are allowed in luxury first class carriages). Cruise class features historic wooden carriages with family rooms with opening windows, perfect for an authentic experience. Dogs travel free, but ensure they are well-behaved by allowing dogs on board at the station master’s discretion.
For a full day, book a Wednesday train ride or a Sunday morning train ride. The former covers 2.5 hours in the historic gold mining town of Maldon, while the latter includes a 90-minute stopover. (There’s only a short stop on the Sunday afternoon tour.) For a dog-friendly meal, head to the Maldon Hotel, which has a beer garden, or dine at one of the side tables.
Dog-friendly Day Trips From Melbourne
Castlemaine is a 90-minute drive from Melbourne, or take a V/Line train for the full rail experience (small dogs are allowed in buggies, see here).
Maledon isn’t the only historic gold mining town in Victoria where your dog can take a historic train ride. If you want to visit another dog-friendly railway, head to Walhalla, about 2.5 hours east of Melbourne. But riding the train (diesel this time) is not a dog-friendly activity in Valhalla.
For something completely different, take a trip to the Extended Long Tunnel Gold Mine. Once one of Victoria’s richest gold mines, today you can take a 50-minute tour through the main tunnel, visit the original gold workings and hear lots of fascinating stories from your guide.
The tunnel is quite dark and damp at times, so I took my little dog along for the trip. Decide in advance if you think your dog will be well behaved and happy to join the trip. Advance booking is recommended due to group size restrictions.
