The Lakefront Trail now runs 18 miles along the beautiful shores of Lake Michigan, connecting neighborhoods, major parks, popular beaches, and famous landmarks like Sea Pier, Buckingham Fountain, and Soldier Field.
It was too difficult for us to explore the whole area of the lake on foot, so we chose the famous path between Sea Pier and Lincoln Park. Our plan was to start a little further south and see Buckingham Fountain, Grant Park, and Millennium Park, but the whole area was closed for a big music festival.
When we visited in late July, the weather in Chicago was unpredictable and unnerving as the sky was cool and the air cooler. But the city has a sense of vibrancy and energy, and a stroll along the lakefront allows you to experience the hustle and bustle of Chicago on the one hand and the deep tranquility of Lake Michigan on the other.
Navy Pier is a top Midwest resort and the most visited tourist attraction in Chicago, and it’s easy to see why! Something for everyone, 50 acres of parks, gardens, shops, restaurants, family attractions and galleries…not to mention the sky and the sea. You can eat, take a boat ride on the lake, take a water taxi to another part of town, swim in a fountain, enjoy free activities or do a little people watching.

Pets are welcome on the Lake Beach Trail and outdoor areas on Sea Pier, including South Beach Beach, the park and other restaurants (ask first). Coastal cruises and water taxis welcome pets on their cruises.

Head north along the lakefront to Milton L. Olive III Park from Sea Pier, a Medal of Honor recipient for his service in Vietnam. A peaceful place to relax, enjoy the view and feel the grass between your legs.
Just around the corner is Ohio Street Beach, a stop for lunch or a drink. Although pets are not allowed on the beach, they can stay at Caffè Oliva!

Continuing north, you’ll reach Oak Street Beach. Again, pets are not allowed on the sand here, but if you want to walk the Magnificent Mile, there is a boardwalk that connects the Lakefront Trail to Michigan Avenue.
Just down the road, you’ll find Lincoln Park, one of Chicago’s most popular outdoor spaces. There are trails to explore, fun parks, a free petting zoo (sorry, no pets at the zoo) and plenty of places to spread out a picnic blanket. If you’ve made it this far and need to fill up your tank, stop by the pet-friendly Café Brewer’s Porch for lunch, dinner or weekend brunch. Don’t forget the ice cream toppings!
For dogs that really want to play on the lake, continue about 3.5 miles from the lake shore to Montrose Dog Beach. Before you go, you must obtain a Dog Friendly Area (DFA) tag for your pup. Tags are available only at Chicago veterinary departments and are required for all dogs using city kennels or kennels.
To receive a stamp, you must schedule a business visit and provide the following information: your dog must have been vaccinated against rabies and have been tested for infectious diseases within the past year, including parasite testing. Current vaccination or titer against smallpox, hepatitis, para-influenza, parvovirus and Bordatella (kennel cough). Fees for unbranded use of DFA service range from $250 to $500.
