Day Trips With Dogs Scotland – In the previous part, Romain, Cynthia and their dog Stilton told us the beginning of their Anglo-Saxon journey in the cities of Folkestone, Balmoral or Edinburgh, passing through the region of Aberdeenshire. There are many dog-friendly destinations to visit in Scotland, allowing them to discover many beautiful sights and addresses in this corner of the UK. We can say that the Scots are real pet lovers!
We are a couple from Rennes in our thirties, the happy owners of a 4-year-old Pembroke Welsh Corgi, Stilton, a little star on Instagram (@stilton.thecorgi).
Day Trips With Dogs Scotland
Time to leave Ross and head back north. The weather is beautiful and will stay like that for 1 week, much to our surprise as well as all the locals we pass by who haven’t seen it for years at this time of the year.
Pet Friendly Hogmanay Break Pitlochry
We decided to have a coffee on the beach at the mouth of Findhorn Bay with its colorful beach huts reminiscent of Gouville sur Mer en Normandy in the Channel. We were alone except for a few locals walking their dogs freely and with Stilton enjoying himself, and our greatest pleasure. For the adventurous, it is possible to sleep in one of the cabins.
After a quick stop for some errands and gas in Inverness, focus on the goal of the day: Loch Ness in search of Nessie!
If the lake is large on the surface, the depth is also large, reaching more than 200m. There are many attractions and tour operators available, which for us takes away from the main location. We decided to take a more remote route 10 minutes from Urquhart Castle (which does not allow dogs and paid parking) with a small hot dog shed.
We crossed a gravel-covered river that was over grade, but there was no room for error or getting our shoes wet (trust: our shoes were wet). Thirty minutes of walking and we arrived in front of a quiet lake… Until the monster appeared in front of us!
Dog-friendly Things To Do In Scotland
Still undaunted by this unexpected encounter, we headed to another, lesser known hole: Loch Glass and the famous abandoned pink house. LODGE Culzie, also known as the Pink House, evokes a sense of wonder at all times, which is enhanced when the walls painted in pink contrast sharply with the snow-covered mountain sides in the background, which is still the case in April with some bleached peaks. We didn’t think we would have another unexpected encounter on this walk, a herd of wild boars blocked our way back to our car.
Recovered from the excitement of the day, we arrived at our second Tiny House excursion, The Hide, found on Airbnb, lost in the woods on the NC500 scenic route. Attention, dry toilet in the warehouse and outside shower! The window allows you to have a panorama of the mountain landscape that surrounds us (in the summer, the sheep are even around the cottage). Stilton enjoys hanging out with the sheep not far from the cottage.

Highlands. Finally we have it. The view is unmistakable along the NC500 coastal scenic road. Houses and cars are rare, there are few plants because we feel that the climate is harsh and there is little space left for plants. There follows a maze of small one-way streets and a ballet of “lanes”, which are side roads to allow cars coming from the opposite direction to pass. I saw a castle literally licking the waves of the sea. , which can be reached by a road that takes about 20 minutes on foot.
How To Plan The Best 14-day Road Trip To Scotland?
Stilton scours the landscape for any wild otters, because yes, otters can be near Keiss Castle. Because today, not otters, but seals will dominate us with their presence.
A few meters away, the ruins of Keiss Castle (XNUMXth century) are located on the steep cliffs overlooking Sinclair Bay, the waves gradually washing over the remains this. We told ourselves that one day the sea would overcome this man-made work.
The fog will clear to reveal the coasts of north-east Scotland. It is home to the natural wonder of Duncansby Stacks as well as a historic lighthouse. These 60 meter marine deposits rise above the sheltered waters of the North Sea. Only the sea birds – the brave ones – hide in the rocks and amuse themselves by fighting the gusts of wind. After the storm, it must be bad to live there. Nature is as dominant as the elements: water, air and earth. There was no fire and fortunately it was not easy to light it. The stones are similar to those of Etretat. We feel so small in this wild landscape.
With my lungs full of fresh air, it was time to try the whiskeys from Britain’s most northerly distillery: Wolfburn. We were warmly welcomed in this rather intimate and artisanal distillery. Stilton was sitting outside with us and the receptionist came over to let me try their dishes. Conquered, like King Carol III who came to visit the distillery a year ago, we leave with 1 bottle. Stilton will have his photo taken with the distillery emblem. My companion took the wheel because here, despite the pubs, whiskey, gin, breweries and distilleries, the alcohol tolerance is close to 2.

“I want to remind you that as Romain mentioned in part 2 of this trip to Scotland, dogs are banned from all distilleries for health and safety reasons.
After a mature hiatus, Stilton’s arrived. We took the opportunity to have a picnic on Dunnet Beach, a large stretch of sand, behind wild dunes as far as the eye could see. Stilton’s playground is endless in his eyes.
Now it’s time to reach the northernmost point of our journey: Dunnet Head Lighthouse. C’ is a magical place like most of the “cafes of the world”. The bird show along the cliffs alone is worth the trip. Bird lovers will be delighted. Stilton thinks about the show and walks with us on the rocks.
We end the day with Torrisdale Bay, a beautiful dune beach located at the mouth of the River Naver between Betty Hill and Torresdale. On the way back, I got a flat tire (even though it was new because I intended to change it before leaving). We waited by asking the mechanic to check our spare tire and re-inflate it. The spare tire was installed, the Airbnb owner directed us to the garage the next morning, first thing to start the new tires.

Now we go south. Waterfall lovers, we start the day at Wailing Widow Falls. It is possible to access it at the highest point and see the continuously emptying hole, or reach the foot after a steep 20-minute hike. I’Scotland lists many waterfalls, but this is definitely one of the most spectacular.
Be warned, the waterfall that falls from Loch na Gainmhich has many names, many of which are related to the horror stories and legends of the region. The most common name I come across is “Crying Widow’s Fall” or “Hangman’s Fall”. The name Weeping Widow Falls comes from a local legend that a young man was hunting a deer in the fog and unfortunately did not see the gorge of the falls and fell to his death from the top of the falls. Very sad, his mother (a widow) went to see where he died and, overcome with grief, jumped herself from the top of the waterfall.
“On vacation, you should go hiking. Hiking is the most popular activity among dog handlers because it has the advantage of being very dog-friendly! But hiking with your dog can’t be improvised! You will find many tips on preparing for a hike.
We decided to take a lunch break at Ullapool Cult Cafe, located on the shores of Loch Broom. Ullapool is a fishing port with whitewashed houses and colorful boats. Today, the town is a pleasant tourist stop and start on Skye. The tourist office recommends the coastal path past PoolEwe et torridon, longer but certainly stunning and wild. They are right. What an aperitif before arriving on Skye via the photogenic Sligachan Bridge.
