With the rise of “families within families” (yes, that’s a thing), it’s no surprise that fur babies are increasingly being included in vacation plans. In fact, searches for pet-friendly restaurants increased 30% from 2017 to 2018, according to Orbitz.

“People treat their pets like family and don’t want to leave them behind when they travel,” said Ross Meredith, general manager of the Westin Hotel in Ottawa. He added that as pets become more accepted in restaurants, shops and attractions, tourists are more likely to take them on adventures.

Frank Campo, director of sales and marketing for Kimpton St. George in Toronto, agrees. “Society is becoming more accepting of traveling with pets, which makes traveling easier,” he explains. “Our pet policy started organically with Bill Kimpton, founder of Kimpton Hotels & Restaurants. He had a small collie named Chianti… [Bill] knew that pet companions could help relieve the stress of travel, and Bring comfort to guests who want to spend time with them.

To meet the growing demand for pet-friendly accommodations, hotels across the country are offering amenities for pet lovers and their furry companions and their feathers. From welcome gifts and concierge services to room service menus catering to carnivorous palates, the trend is to welcome cats, dogs, birds and sometimes even reptiles as honored guests.​

We’ve found some hotels in Canada that go above and beyond when it comes to comfort and convenience.

Pet Friendly Hotels

Located in the heart of downtown Halifax, adjacent to Castle Hill, the Cambridge Suites Hotel welcomes dogs and cats of all sizes, as well as other small animals (reptiles and birds must be kept indoors). Four-legged friends are free to explore the lobby and rooftop terrace, and the hotel welcomes each furry guest with gifts, toys and helpful information about the area, such as the location of the nearest fire hydrants.

Small print. There is a $25 cleaning fee for stays of 7 days or less and a $100 cleaning fee for stays of more than 7 days.​

On the Holy Coast. St. Andrews in southwestern New Brunswick is the historic Algonquin resort where dogs, cats and birds can relax with their owners in luxurious surroundings. Pet beds and bowls are provided upon check-in, and non-human guests can roam the spacious beachside gardens on a leash.

Located in downtown Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan, Temple Gardens has pet-friendly rooms and a special pet care package that includes special food bowls, treats, toys, trash bags and a $30 donation to Moose Jaw Humane Organization . . Wakamow Valley Park, with over 20 kilometers of pet-friendly trails, is also a 10-minute walk away.

Beautifully printed. A maximum of two pets are allowed per room, with each pet weighing no more than 60 pounds. There is also a $35 nightly fee.

The new hotel, built on the site of the former Alberta Boot Company headquarters, has a flexible pet policy that allows owners to keep their furry friends in their rooms without supervision if necessary. Dog food is also acceptable to good people.

Predator Ridge, located in British Columbia’s Okanagan Valley Resort, is one of the only dog-friendly golf courses in Canada. “Sundays for Your Dog” starts every Sunday after 4 p.m. In addition to the links, pets are also welcome on the outdoor patios of the guest house and cabins, as well as some dining areas of the hotel.​

This Whistler boutique hotel prides itself on being extremely pet-friendly, and canine staff members Talitha and Zoe are waiting for new arrivals. Guestrooms are stocked with cups and snacks upon arrival, and each non-human guest’s name is written on a VIP pet board at the front desk. The best part.
