Capturing cities of different sizes is important because comparing a smaller city (like Waco, Texas) with a larger city (like Chicago, Illinois) is like comparing apples to oranges. Each city size level will have different access to amenities, exercise opportunities, and costs (discussed below).

Dog parks (0 to 100 points): We obtained data on dog parks from the Trust for Public Land website. We used ParkServe’s search tool to obtain data from the 150 cities we studied and derived index scores by calculating the number of dog parks per capita.

Dog Friendly Trails (0 to 100 points): For trail information, visit the AllTrails hiking and trail website. To obtain data on this metric, we searched a specific city and set the filter to “dog-friendly trails.”

Dog-friendly hotels (0 to 100 points): We used Google Travel to find available dog-friendly hotels in each city and calculated the score based on the city’s population size.

These cities are the best cities in each state to own a dog. They have demonstrated an extraordinary commitment to ensuring dogs have access to public lands, ease of apartment and hotel rentals for dog owners, insurance costs, and more. Keeping your dog healthy requires regular exercise, regular visits to the vet, the right puppy supplies, and a safe home where your puppy can thrive.

Access to dog-friendly parks is one of the best ways for dogs to socialize and exercise, both of which are crucial to their well-being. Alexandria, Virginia, crushes the competition with almost twice as many dog parks per capita as the next best city, Boise, Idaho.

Boise leads the way in having the most dog-friendly trails per 100,000 people. AllTrails lists 9,778 dog-friendly trails in the United States, including 105 in Boise alone. Access to safe and enjoyable outdoor spaces is beneficial to your dog’s physical and mental health.

Pet-friendly hotels indicate a general culture of dog accessibility in the community. Moreover, it is a great solution for tourists who plan to travel with their pets. Metairie, LA, took first place with 97 pet-friendly hotels; This is a very high result for only 142,000 inhabitants.

Like pet-friendly hotels, restaurants that allow dogs often maintain a community for service and non-service animals. Being able to roam dogs to local areas means less time spent at home alone and more socialization and rest. Orlando, Florida is an amazing place with at least 379 pet-friendly restaurants.

Not being able to find rental properties that allow pets can be a significant source of stress for many dog owners or potential dog owners. This isn’t a major problem, however, because Chicago has 437.80 dog-friendly apartments per 100,000 residents. Residents of the Windy City will have no problem finding a great apartment for their pets.

Moving out of town or state can be difficult if you don’t have a reliable pet sitter. Knowing that high-quality, professional and reliable pet care options are available takes the burden off pet owners. The largest numbers of pet sitters are located in Jersey City, New Jersey and Yonkers, New York, likely due to the densely populated tri-state area.

Among the various expenses associated with owning a dog, pet insurance can vary greatly depending on where you live. Knowing that you will likely have to account for these costs over the life of your dog will help you budget, but will also keep costs manageable in the event of a serious health problem or emergency. Tulsa, OK has the lowest pet insurance prices on our list, but many Texas cities also rank in the top ten.

It is logical that the cost of pet insurance varies depending on breed and age. So why is there such a price difference between American cities? The monthly cost for an insured, healthy, 2-year-old golden retriever in Albuquerque, New Mexico is approximately $22.83, while a similar dog in New York costs approximately $62.35 per month.

The main reason why pet insurance costs vary from city to city is because of different veterinary costs and the overall cost of living in the city. As the cost of living increases, so do the costs of renting or subletting the veterinary clinic building, employing veterinary staff, costs of materials and other related expenses. This makes sense, but it significantly increases the cost of dog ownership in many large American cities, and potential owners will have to take into account the additional costs throughout the animal’s life.

The Best Dog-friendly States To Live In, And Why

The 51 countries included in our study were selected based on available data. Unfortunately, many countries lack basic information on how to treat animals, especially dogs. We used a mixed-methods approach in our research project, incorporating the following eight ranking factors to determine scores that indicate how well each country treats its dogs.

1. Animal Welfare Index (0 to 50 points): This data comes from the Animal Welfare Index (API) website. The API identifies many factors that determine its metrics, including the recognition of animal sensitivities, the prohibition of animal suffering, and the existence of animal welfare legislation.

2. Companion animals (0 to 50 points): Data from the Animal Welfare Index. Pet scores are based on a ranking from A to G set by legislation designed to protect pets and other companion animals in the countries surveyed.

Note: While many of the countries on our list have animal welfare laws, we recognize that these laws are not consistently enforced. We are not wrong to assume that all of these countries enforce these laws. However, animal rights legislation is a step in the right direction when it comes to protecting animals from harm.

4. Animal Penal Laws (0 to 50 points): This indicator was obtained via the API. The results were determined by a country that has laws detailing animals’ ability to feel sensations.

5. Pet-friendly hotels per person (0 to 100 points): We determined how many hotels there are in a given area
