The best part is that all of these destinations are less than 3.5 hours’ drive from central Sydney, and most are even closer. For each destination, I’ll list dog-friendly accommodations and cafes, off-leash beaches and dog parks, and the best dog-friendly sightseeing options. It’s time to decide where to go first…
Best Dog Friendly Day Trips Sydney
The coastal area around Kiama and Gerringong is perfect for a quick, dog-friendly escape from Sydney. With beautiful beaches, lush vegetation and spectacular natural landscapes, it has a lot to offer, including plenty of dog-friendly attractions.
35 Dog-friendly Days Out From Sydney
One of my favorites is the Kiama Beach walk between Minnamurra and Gerringong. Other highlights include visiting the famous Kiama Hole, photographing Cathedral Rocks and enjoying the off-leash dog beaches.
Just beyond Kiama and Jerringong are the towns of Berry and Kangaroo Valley. While the former is dominated by seaside delights, Bury and Kangaroo Valley are inland towns surrounded by farmland and forested mountain valleys.
Take your pet for a walk along Barry’s beautiful shopping street, enjoy a glass of wine at a local winery, admire the views from the top of Mount Kambura or simply relax at the Friendly Inn in Kangaroo Valley. There are plenty of options, including beautiful, dog-friendly cottages that are perfect for your holiday.
The Jervis Bay area around Huskisson is close enough to Sydney for a weekend getaway, but far enough away to avoid Sydney’s strict beach rules. The area is famous for its beautiful white beaches, and many of them are dog-friendly and offer plenty of opportunities for off-leash and on-leash dog walks.

Then Jervis Bay is of course the perfect place for a dog-friendly beach holiday. Spend your days relaxing on the beaches, maybe try SUP or kayaking. Then spend the night in one of the many dog-friendly vacation rentals.
The next largest town on the New South Wales south coast is the seaside town of Ulladulla. Traditionally known for its large fishing fleet, the town has now become a popular beach destination.
Dogs have recently been welcomed at Bannisters at Mollymook in both the pet-friendly Terrace Suites at Bannisters by the Sea and the two pet-friendly Classic Rooms at Bannisters Pavilion, perfect for a luxurious stay with your pooch.

Just over an hour southwest of central Sydney. Leaving Sydney’s sprawling suburbs behind, you’ll soon reach the start of the Southern Highlands. Featuring cool-weather country estates, historic farm villages and vineyards, it’s the perfect place for a weekend getaway.
The area surrounding the towns of Bowral and Moss Vale offers many attractions for dogs, including pet-friendly accommodation. In winter it’s tempting to curl up next to a crackling fire, and on the coldest days it can snow lightly.
The country’s capital, Canberra, is not only about museums, galleries and squares. There are some great sightseeing options available for guests with dogs, not to mention the growing number of dog-friendly hotels, from single rooms to luxury hotels.
Early spring is an especially wonderful time to visit, when there are two wonderful dog walks each year: one with the late season snowfall and the other with the annual Floriade festival.

Mudgee has long been one of my favorite country towns in Australia. With historic streets wide enough for carriage rides, there are also wonderful wineries producing great wines, not to mention relaxing and friendly tastings.
Luckily, it’s also a great dog-friendly place, especially if you want to try some wine. When you pick up an up-to-date guide to the area at the Tourist Information Center, you’ll find plenty of checkmarks in the visitor information column letting you know whether everything (from cellar doors to cafes to shops) is dog-friendly!

There is a wide range of dog friendly accommodation available in Port Stephens. Not to mention dog-friendly beaches, the opportunity to cruise the calm waters on a yacht, or take your dog on a cruise to the tea gardens.
A little further away from Sydney, the twin towns of Forster-Tuncurry on the Mid North Coast deserve a slightly longer stay, at least a long weekend or a relaxing week’s break, to really enjoy them.

Byron B is a huge dog lover. Even on the main beach, right in front of the Beach Hotel Tavern (where you can see the famous wreck emerging from the waves). Byron CBD is particularly busy in the summer, so head to the main beach early in the morning before the crowds.
