Dog Friendly Vacations California – Palm Springs, California is located 100 miles east of Los Angeles in the Coachella Valley of the Sonoran Desert. As a popular resort town for many years, Palm Springs is known for its natural hot springs, hotels, restaurants, golf courses, sunny weather and, of course, dog friendliness.
Downtown Palm Springs is constantly evolving with new shops, restaurants, hotels and new neighborhoods, such as the development of the Uptown Design District to the north. The annual Coachella and Stagecoach festivals draw attention to the desert cities, and January’s Palm Springs International Film Festival attracts the biggest names and the largest number of visitors.

“Greater Palm Springs” includes eight cities outside of Palm Springs: Desert Hot Springs, Cathedral City, Rancho Mirage, Palm Desert, Indian Wells, La Quinta, Indio and Coachella. Tourism is the largest contributor to the region’s economy. I would recommend staying in Palm Springs and exploring the other towns by car. Palm Desert has a nice outdoor center and Indio/Coachella is great for photography or if you’re attending a festival (without your dog).
An Unforgettable Guide To Dog Friendly Death Valley (with Hidden Gems!)
We have traveled to many dog friendly places and when I say Palm Springs is the most dog friendly city we have visited, I mean it! It’s hard to explain, but wherever we went with Ruby, there was just a feeling of welcome, and hopefully that will be the case in a wider application.
The weather in Palm Springs is good all year round, but there is a particular time that is considered the best to visit – winter and early spring. Palm Springs feels special during the winter months of November and January, because while the rest of the country deals with cold and snow, Palm Springs puts on a show with sunshine and temperatures of 65-75 degrees.
When visiting Palm Springs with your dog, I don’t recommend going after March. Unless your only plan is to stay poolside during your trip. Summer temperatures are usually around 100℉ and can reach 115℉ with less than 10% humidity.
The desert lodges in and around Palm Springs are a common sight and one of my favorite things about visiting the city. I’m a huge fan of mid-century modern architecture and wild luxury, so I’d be in heaven for hotel and house rentals.

If renting a house is your preferred location—we always prefer a kitchen and direct access to the outdoors—then head to AirBnB or VRBO and turn on the pet feature. These are some of the houses I have saved on my wish list. The photos below were taken during our weekend stay at Mesa Tavira in Joshua Tree. You can see our full house tour on Instagram.
Palm Springs has always been a dog-friendly town, and with 354 days of sunshine each year, there are plenty of things to do to welcome your dog with open arms.
Boozehounds Palm Springs was started by three friends for a simple reason…they loved dogs and had a dream to have a place where people could take their dogs and hang out in style while enjoying an amazing cocktail or amazing food. This is the most dog-friendly restaurant we’ve visited for two reasons: 1) the dog menu offers new food options that cater to elite and common protein allergies, and 2) they allow dogs to eat in the atrium, which has plenty of Fun. When visiting in the winter months. We loved having lunch here and you can see our visit on Instagram.

4 Paws Coffee Co. is another dog-friendly establishment in Palm Springs that you should check out. When we walked through the door, we were welcomed with open arms, and the cafe was decorated with dog decorations. Roo and I ate pastries and coffee in the cafe while she petted the puppy. Purchases from the cafe support their efforts to give back to local shelters and continue their mission to bring great coffee, food and connections to the Palm Springs community.
Moorten Botanic Gardens is a private arboretum designed to share the beauty and variety of wild plants with everyone. Characteristic wild trees, plants and cacti come from all over the world and range in size from miniature to giant. They are home to the world’s first cacti – my favorite part of the garden – and allow dogs to roam freely throughout the garden.
Garden parking is on the corner of the street at the entrance to S Palm Canyon Dr. Admission is $5/person and dogs are free. This small garden can be explored in 30 minutes with a leisurely stroll around the house. We spent some more time here as I was busy taking pictures in the cactarium. If you go during the week, you should be lucky with little or no crowds.
One unique thing about Southern California is all the wind turbine farms. They do make an official visit to Palm Springs to meet them, but I don’t know if they allow dogs. We chose to do our own research.
The 10 Best Dog Friendly Hotels In Carmel For All Budgets
To see the background below, take I-10 to Indian Canyon Drive and Garnett. If you are driving north from Indian Canyon, take a left on Garnett and go about 1/4 mile and you will find places to stop. There is little or no traffic in the area, so you can park wherever you want, as long as you don’t take the highway.
I recommend going at sunset. The desert does show a cotton sky at sunset, but the sun quickly hides behind the mountains, so make sure you arrive before sunset. Fences are placed around the turbines, but the area is not visible in the shade and against the bushes and mountains. You just have to accept it.
Although there are restrictions on visiting Joshua Tree National Park with your best friend, there are a number of dog-friendly activities that allow you to enjoy the park’s diverse landscapes while visiting with your dog. We’ve visited Ruby several times and put together the best Joshua Tree tour for a half-day trip to the park.
The medieval community is a gem for those interested in medieval modern architecture. Almost all the homes in Indian Canyon were built in the mid-century with large glass windows, wide balconies and access to pools. Therefore, it has a rich architectural history and a spectacular and unobstructed view of the mountains.
Carmel-by-the-sea Pet-friendly Vacation Rentals
You’ve probably seen some of these houses on Instagram, with their beautiful decorations and colorful doors. The best way to enjoy the houses is to park and walk the streets. I especially like the houses in South Yosemite and South Camino Real.
The dog-friendly vibe really comes alive around Downtown Palm Springs. It is a lively center filled with unique shops, restaurants and art galleries. We had many people come up to us and share how well they treated Ruby, and every shop owner immediately wanted to give Ruby pets, water and treats. If you follow us on social media, you will know that Ruby has a strange streak, but when it was recommended to pets, she quickly obliged.
There are many things to do downtown, and the main thoroughfares are on Palm Canyon Drive and Indian Canyon Drive. I would recommend taking the plunge and getting into something that looks interesting. South Palm Canyon is a bit more compact and the northern area is more modern with a recent renaissance like the Uptown Design District.
Some of the stores on my list are Ibis Women’s Boutique, Simply Fabulous for Palm Springs souvenirs, Peepas, Out West Trading Co, Covet for durable jewelry and Destination PSP. The PSP console has the best home decor in the mid-century.

Downtown restaurants we love: Boozehounds, 1501 Uptown Gastropub, Ice Cream and Shop (pe), and Tac/Quila (get the churro ice cream sandwich).
In addition to shopping and dining downtown, you can also find unique art displays scattered around, such as the larger-than-life PS ❤️ you and Marilyn Monroe statues pictured above. If you have time, you can use this guide to find them all.
As you can tell by now, Palm Springs has a thriving art scene, and in addition to large and dark sculptures, there are many murals throughout the city. My favorite is Greetings from the Palm
