There are monastery ruins, houses, gardens and parks. Long stretches of coast and countryside including the Dales and North York Moors. There are many dog-friendly beaches in Yorkshire, some allowing dogs to play in the sand and sea all year round, while others have seasonal restrictions. Some are close to all the amenities of a traditional seaside resort, some offer stunning views of the Heritage Coast and some I drive a few extra miles from home just for the cake! Hunmanby Gap – If my dog had a preference for dog friendly beaches in Yorkshire this beach would definitely be high on the list so it seems only right to start here! The beach just 4 miles from Filey is absolutely huge and stretches along Reighton Sands (
), with plenty of sand for your dog to enjoy. The stunning scenery of the Heritage Coast is an added bonus for us humans! There is a car park at the end of Sands Road which costs £1 per hour for up to 3 hours or £5 for the whole day, but you have to walk down the hill to get to the beach. Don’t miss the chance to enjoy a delicious cake at Hunmanby Beach Café, which is dog-friendly inside and out.
Freysop Beach is another favorite of ours, it’s actually part of Bridlington Bay and you can walk along the beach to Bridlington, as we often do. Stretching for miles, this stretch of flat sandy beach is very popular with dog walkers, and you can even leash your horse! My dog is always meeting new people here and I would probably move here if I could! There is private parking at the top of the beach and prices vary seasonally, but even in summer it’s only £3 for the whole day. Cafe Fjós is dog friendly, the food is delicious and they sometimes stock dog food, which Maya and Lucia love.

Runswick Bay is undoubtedly one of the prettiest fishing villages in Yorkshire. This sheltered sandy beach is just 9 miles north of Whitby with all the facilities available in the village. There are tons of fossils if that’s what you’re into, and the location is very beautiful. Worth a look. Parking is available in the car park on the hill and there is a great dog friendly pub in the village.
Cayton Bay, 3 miles south of Scarborough, is another great beach. It is popular with surfers and there is a surf shop in the car park where you can hire boards etc. Or a cup of coffee. I love the natural feel and stunning scenery of this beach. A visit to the WW11 bunker at the northern end of the beach is also interesting.
Flamborough North Landing is small but very, very beautiful. The white chalk cliffs are stunning. We were lucky enough to see puffins during our visit here. The beach is sandy and pebbly and is accessible by a ramp. If you plan to visit Flamborough Head (

My girls ran through the sea grass even though they had to shower afterwards! This pretty cobbled town has plenty of dog-friendly food and drink establishments, many of which offer doggy treats!
