Best Vacations With Dogs In California – Palm Springs, California is located about 100 miles east of Los Angeles in the Coachella Valley region of the Sonoran Desert. As a popular resort town for many years, Palm Springs is known for its natural hot springs, hotels, restaurants, golf courses, sunny weather and, of course, dog-friendly.
Downtown Palm Springs is constantly evolving with new shops, restaurants, hotels and neighborhoods, such as the development of the North End as the Uptown Design District. The annual Coachella and Stagecoach festivals have brought attention to desert cities, and the Palm Springs International Film Festival in January attracts big names and a growing number of visitors.

Greater Palm Springs includes eight cities in addition to Palm Springs: Desert Hot Springs, Cathedral City, Rancho Mirage, Palm Desert, Indian Wells, La Quinta, Indio, and Coachella. Tourism is the region’s main contributor to the local economy. I would recommend staying in Palm Springs and exploring the other cities by car. Palm Desert has a nice outdoor mall and Indio/Coachella can be great for photo ops or if you’re attending a festival (without your dog).

We have visited many dog friendly places and when I say Palm Springs is the most dog friendly city we have visited, I mean it! It’s hard to explain, but it was just a welcoming feeling wherever we went with Ruby, and I hope that comes across in this comprehensive guide.
The weather in Palm Springs is undoubtedly pleasant year-round, but there is a certain time that is considered best to visit: winter and early spring. Palm Springs feels especially special during the winter months, which fall from November to January, because while the rest of the country faces cold temperatures and snow, Palm Springs puts on a show with sunshine and warm temperatures of 65-75 degrees.
When traveling to Palm Springs with your dog, I would not recommend going there after March. Unless your only plan is to be by a pool during your visit. Summer temperatures are typically around 100℉ and can reach up to 115℉, with humidity below 10%.
Accommodations in Palm Springs and the surrounding desert areas offer quite an atmosphere and one of my favorite things about visiting this city. I’m a big fan of mid-century modern architecture and desert luxury, so I’d be in heaven just for the hotel and home rentals in this area.

If you want to stay in downtown Palm Springs, there are several dog-friendly hotels on and around Palm Canyon Dr. and Indian Canyon Dr., which are ideal for walking to shops and restaurants. Discover Arrival Palm Springs, Kimpton Rowan Palm Springs, The Colony Palms Hotel & Bungalows and The Saguaro Palm Springs.
If renting a house is your home of choice—we’re always fans of a kitchen and direct access to the great outdoors—head over to AirBnB or VRBO and turn on the pet feature. Here are some of the rentals I have saved on my wish list. The photos below were taken while we stayed at Mesa Tavira in Joshua Tree for a weekend. You can find our entire tour of the house on Instagram.
Palm Springs has always been a dog-loving town, and with 354 days of sunshine each year, there are plenty of things to do that will welcome your dog with open arms.
Boozehounds Palm Springs was founded by three friends for one simple reason…they loved dogs and dreamed of owning a place where people could take their pups, enjoy a delicious cocktail or a great meal and socialize in style. This is the most dog-friendly restaurant we’ve ever visited for two reasons: 1) the dog menu is elite and offers fresh food options that accommodate common protein allergies, and 2) the dogs get to eat in their atrium, which is perfect. When visiting in the winter months. We loved eating here for brunch and you can get a sneak peek of our visit on Instagram.

4 Paws Coffee Co. is another dog-themed establishment in Palm Springs that you should check out. We were welcomed with open arms as soon as we walked in the door and the cafe is decorated with dog-centric decorations and merchandise. We enjoyed our cakes and coffee in the cafe with Rue while she treated herself to a puppy cup. Purchases at the cafe help support their efforts to give back to local shelters and further their goal of bringing quality coffee, food and connections to the Palm Springs community.
Moorten Botanic Gardens is a private arboretum that was created to share the beauty and extraordinary varieties of desert plants with all visitors. The desert’s trees, plants and cacti come from all over the world and range in size from miniature to giant. They are the world’s first cactus – my favorite part of the garden – and let dogs roam the garden.
Parking for the garden is around the corner, opposite the entrance on S Palm Canyon Dr. Admission is $5/person and dogs are free. This small garden can be explored in 30 minutes by a leisurely stroll around the property. We spent a little extra time here because I was obsessed with taking photos in the cactus. If you visit during the week, you should be lucky with little to no crowds.
The unique thing about Southern California is all the areas with wind turbines. They actually have an official tour in Palm Springs to look at them, but I don’t know if they allow dogs. We decided on self-examination.

To see the background below, go to Indian Canyon Drive and Garnett from I-10. If you are driving north on Indian Canyon, turn left on Garnett and continue approx. 1/4 mile and you will see places where you can park. There is little to no traffic in this area so as long as you are blocking a main road you should be able to park where you want to film.
I would recommend going at sunset. The desert really comes into its own at cotton candy sunset, but the sun sets early behind the mountains, so be sure to arrive before the actual sunset time. There is a fence around the wind turbines, but it is not really visible with the shadowy mountain backdrop and bushes in the area. You just have to accept it.
Although there are restrictions when it comes to visiting Joshua Tree National Park with your four-legged best friend, there are still some dog-friendly activities that allow you to experience the different landscapes of the park during your visit with your dog. We have visited Ruby several times and put together the best Joshua Tree tour for a half or full day visit to the park.
This mid-century community is a gem for those interested in mid-century modern architecture. Almost all of the homes in Indian Canyon are mid-century built with large glass windows, expansive porches and ample access to swimming pools. For this reason, it has a rich architectural history and a fantastic, breathtaking view of the mountains.

You’ve probably seen some of these homes on Instagram with their beautifully manicured landscapes and colorful front doors. The best way to enjoy the houses is to park and walk on the street. I especially like the houses in South Yosemite and South Camino Real.
The dog-friendly feel really comes to life around downtown Palm Springs. It is a bustling center full of unique shops, restaurants and art. We had so many people come up to us and tell us how smart they thought Ruby was, and every store owner immediately approached Ruby, wanting to pet her, water her and offer her treats. If you follow us on social media, you know Ruby has a case of stranger danger, but she was quick to accept the animals offered.
There are so many things to do downtown and the main thoroughfares are Palm Canyon Drive and Indian Canyon Drive. I would recommend just walking around and jumping to anything that looks interesting. South Palm Canyon is a little more kitsch, and the northern area is more modern with its recent renaissance than the Uptown Design District.
Some stores that were on my list to visit included: Ibis Women’s Boutique, Just Fabulous for Palm Springs souvenirs, Peepas, Out West Trading Co, Covet for permanent jewelry, and Destination PSP. Destination PSP has the best mid-century home decor.

Restaurants we enjoyed downtown were Boozehounds, 1501 Uptown Gastropub, Ice Cream and Shop (PE), and Tak/Quila (get the churro ice cream sandwich).
In addition to shopping and dining downtown, you can also find unique art exhibits scattered around the neighborhood, such as the larger-than-life PS ❤️ you and Marilyn Monroe sculptures pictured above. If you have time, you can use this guide to find them all.
As you can already see, Palm Springs has a thriving art scene, and in addition to large, obscure sculptures, there are also numerous murals throughout the city. My favorite is Palm Greetings
